Job Description

Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL) is seeking a senior advisor with data science skills and an in-depth knowledge of the national security mission space. In this position we are seeking a candidate that can develop and foster client relationships and to represent PNNL as a subject matter expert. This position involves on-going, on-site support as well as frequent contact with sponsors. It is expected that the individual identified for this position will act as a liaison between PNNL technical teams developing capabilities, and officials in one or more client organizations. Key responsibilities and accountabilities include:

  • Developing visionary solutions to sponsor’s hard problems, and serving as the champion and gaining advocacy for their implementation

  • Being recognized as a national expert in computational science and mathematics

  • Building multi-disciplinary teams leveraging talent across the lab to meet project needs

  • Capturing and overseeing a portfolio of programs centered around computational and data science

  • Providing substantial input to laboratory strategies and helping to drive the direction of new laboratory initiatives

  • Identifying creative solutions to support sustained growth in select client mission areas

  • Serving as a liaison between senior members of the client organization and project staff in Seattle and Richland, WA communicating the mission needs

  • Providing technical insight to stakeholders on research, development, and acquisition planning.

  • Developing strategies for the lab’s data science and computing capability areas

  • Maintaining deep knowledge of key technical and research programs in the client’s portfolio

  • Providing guidance to sponsors on organizational engagement strategies to identify and mitigate political sensitivities.

  • Must be able to work with non-sensitive, sensitive, and classified information as appropriate for individual projects

  • Must be able to demonstrate an ability to manage sensitive business situations and influence positive outcomes.

  • Must be able to recognize and accept that they will be working in technical areas associated with the National Security of the United States.

  • Must be self-confident, able to relate concepts with conviction and humor, be open and approachable, and an engagingly good listener.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s with 12+ years of experience; Master’s with 8+ years of experience; JD or PhD with 5+ years of experience

  • This position requires an active DOD TS or DOE Q, or the ability to obtain and maintain such clearance, and the ability to obtain an SCI.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current active Federal Top Secret Clearance (DOD TS, DOD TS/SCI, DOE Q or DOE Q/SCI), and the ability to obtain and maintain an SCI

  • Strong initiative. Demonstrates entrepreneurial spirit. Highly flexible; ability to understand issues from multiple points of view, but also possess a bias toward action with an ability to follow through on implementation.

  • Proven ability to support complex, politically sensitive, internationally critical, and technically challenging projects.

  • Work location is in Washington, DC

  • Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B. All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions.

  • This position will require the ability to obtain and maintain an SCI clearance. Applicants must be U. S. citizens, no dual citizenship, and have no foreign national immediate family members. Work location will be primarily the Washington

  • D.C. area, with travel determined by project need.

  • Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.

  • This position may require exposure to content which may be considered abnormal or graphic in nature.
