Job Description

The Coastal Sciences Division at PNNL is seeking a highly motivated individual with an independent work ethic to provide support for ecosystem and restoration related research. Work will include a combination of field and lab research focused on evaluating the beneficial use of dredge material as salmonid habitat in the Columbia River. Field research will focus on sampling benthic prey communities and lab work will focus on processing field collected samples. The position requires a combination of working in team-based settings as well as the ability to successfully work independently. Field work requires travel, lifting and carrying gear through uneven and difficult terrain, working in inclement weather, and comfort working from a boat or in water.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be degree-seeking students enrolled at an accredited college or university. Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall GPA of 2.5.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques for collecting field data related to natural resource management

  • Field experience and sampling techniques relevant to juvenile salmon research

  • Familiarity with aquatic species of the lower Columbia River and estuary

  • Experience processing aquatic benthic samples for macroinvertebrate analysis

  • Willingness and ability to work at a microscope for extended time periods sorting macroinvertebrate samples

  • Very strong organizational skills and attention to detail to prepare gear necessary for field excursions

  • Willingness and ability to complete tasks in a punctual and dependable manner

  • Ability to work remotely outdoors for extensive hours in adverse conditions

This position will be located at the PNNL Sequim Office and will report to the Coastal Research Technical Group.

Currently enrolled at a university completing a BS/BA in fisheries, aquatic science, ecology, or a related field.

3.5 GPA or higher is preferred
