Job Description
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Marine Sciences Laboratory (MSL) located in Sequim, WA has a robust marine research programs in Sustainable Environmental Systems focused on renewable ocean energy, climate change impacts in the coastal ocean, ecological restoration, ecotoxicology, marine biotechnology, and contaminant fate and effects in the coastal ocean.
Participate on a team of interdisciplinary scientists and engineers to develop and implement research projects associated with marine systems.
Perform research with an emphasis on projects that support the development of environmental monitoring technologies for marine energy and uses of marine energy for environmental observations; quantifying processes and conditions within marine and coastal ecosystems;
Integrate custom and commercial off the shelf sensors with mobile and fixed oceanographic observing platforms
Assist in circuit board design and system integration including software controls and coding for embedded systems
Build collaborations with expertise within the organization as well as external partnerships that increase lab capabilities.
The hiring level will be determined from the education, experience, sustained scientific impact, and overall skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:
Level 1: Receives instruction on required tasks and reports results on time and on budget, while working under guidance from experienced staff. Takes initiative to set personal direction and goals. Work is conducte wdith a high standard of quality safety, and security.
Level 2: Receives guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives; independently completes recurring assignments. Defines and leads project work at a small task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. Contributes to proposals. Embraces expectations for quality, safety, and security. Communicates the importance within the work team. In addition to the description above, those qualifying for hiring at Level 2 will be expected to:
Contribute to proposals that lead to opportunities for new work.
Lead engineering project work that includes mentorship and limited management of junior staff and students.
Minimum Qualifications
- BS/BA with 0-1 years of experience or MS/MA with 0 years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
BS/BA with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience, PhD with 0 years of experience.
MS or PhD degree in a electrical and/or computer engineering, or related engineering field such as marine, mechanical or environmental engineering
Experience in sensor integration for fixed and mobile platforms
Experience working in the marine environment
Experience in board level circuit design
Experience in environmental monitoring and data analysis
Experience in software coding languages, C++, python, Matlab
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
