Job Description

PNNL is seeking an Earth Scientist with expertise in coastal biogeochemistry, and the interaction of terrestrial systems (soils, marshes, forests) with rivers, lakes, and oceans to join our team of innovative scientists in Sequim, Washington.

Responsibilities include:

  • The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team focused on designing and conducting field observations and experiments directly inform models developed for a range of scales and processes.

  • Leading tasks, teams, and mentoring other staff will be an important part of this position, as will be the ability to contribute to a larger multidisciplinary team.

  • Presenting research in peer-reviewed publications and at scientifically relevant conferences is expected.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Level 2: Leads specific tasks of the project to meet scope, schedule and budget. Expected to contribute professionally, building a professional reputation for technical expertise. Fully applying and interpreting standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies. Contributes technical content to proposals and develops business through excellent project performance.

Level 3: Manages small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Integrates intellectual and technical capabilities of work teams. Enhances technical/professional skills of junior staff through active mentoring and training. Generates ideas for new proposals and participates in business development activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of experience, or advanced degree.

  • Experience using advanced analytical tools (field sensors, chemical analyses, data exploration, or predictive models) to address scientific questions resolving transport and transformation of carbon and nutrients across the terrestrial aquatic interface is essential.

  • A strong record of publications and leadership in coastal biogeochemistry is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of experience, or Master’s degree with 3+ years of experience, or PHD with 1+ years of experience.

  • A PhD in oceanography, geology, hydrology, or other environmentally-relevant science is preferred.

  • Expertise or experience in other scientific domains such as ecology, biology, geology, hydrology, or atmospheric sciences desirable.

  • Post-doctoral experience is preferred.
