Job Description

PNNL has an extensive research portfolio in Earth and environmental sciences including biogeochemistry, hydrology, atmospheric sciences, Earth system modeling, and interactions with human systems such as energy infrastructure. Recently, we have been extending this portfolio with a new thrust in coastal and terrestrial-aquatic research. The Chief Scientist for Integrated Coastal Modeling will bring expertise and capabilities that extend this new and exciting research direction for DOE and other sponsors, with a particular focus on coupled modeling across multiple sectors and scales. Responsibilities include:

  • Serves as an intellectual lead for a new program thrust at PNNL in coastal modeling

  • Leads interdisciplinary, multi-institutional modeling teams to develop and apply integrated coastal modeling capabilities to improve scientific understanding of coupled terrestrial-aquatic and human-natural systems

  • Participates in the development of a significant experimental and/or observational program on coastal ecosystem process science that complements the predictive modeling effort

  • Delivers scientific advances that elevate PNNL’s reputation in coastal system science

  • Produces successful proposals, peer-reviewed papers, technical presentations, and other technical artifacts.

  • Trains and mentors early and mid-career researchers and works collaboratively with researchers across PNNL and other institutions around the world

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following :

Level 5 : Leader in the development and execution of directorate strategies. Leads in the capture, planning, and technical execution of complex interdisciplinary projects and programs across organizational boundaries with lab level impact, and outside of the laboratory. Captures and enables sufficient funding to support self and project teams. Collaborates with other Labs, academia, industry and leads multi-Lab projects.

Level 6 : Key leader defining Laboratory and sponsor strategic initiatives to expand national and international capabilities for transformational solutions to complex scientific and technical challenges. Sought out to lead cross-directorate/ institution teams that influence Lab-wide operations and strategies. Defines and builds new business areas across directorates and institutions supporting self and multiple project teams across internal and external organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS with 9+ years of experience, or MS with 7+ years of experience, or PhD with 5+ years of experience in oceanography, hydrology, atmospheric science, environmental science, or related field.

  • Demonstrated expertise in the development and/or application of models related to predictive understanding of coastal systems, including physical and/or biogeochemical processes and their interactions with coastal ecosystems and infrastructure.

  • Work history of leading interdisciplinary teams to develop and execute major research projects.

  • Strong publication record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in oceanography, hydrology, atmospheric science, environmental science, or related field with over 10 years relevant experience.

  • Broad understanding of land-ocean-atmosphere interactions and the complex multi-scale interactions among human and natural systems.

  • Internationally recognized expertise in coastal science with demonstrated intellectual leadership on one or more specific research areas relevant to DOE’s emerging coastal system science portfolio.

  • Demonstrated track record of successful fundraising.

  • Experience with DOE/BER related models and/or modeling programs.
