Discipline, principal job duties/expectations, and qualitative and quantitative measures of performance that exceed the Functional Descriptor:
- The incumbent should have experience working with chemicals in a laboratory setting is required. Incumbent must have excellent attention to detail and demonstrated ability for meticulous, reproducible work and documentation. Experience working in clean rooms, with radioactive materials, trace or micro chemistry techniques, chemical separations, and mass spectrometry are desired. Experience with quantitative and instrumental analysis, isotope ratio or geochronometric techniques are also desired.
The incumbent will be responsible to Project Managers (PM) for the execution of work scope and for producing technical deliverables; and to line management for helping build science and technology (S&T) capability.
The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:
Level II: Incumbent is expected to build reputation through application of S&E principles and theories, developing technical approaches to solve challenges. Building networks at a local and capability level. Effectively teaming to share resources and optimize research at the group and division level. Mentoring junior staff and students. Incumbent receives guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives; independently completes recurring assignments. Incumbent will lead specific tasks of the project to meet scope, schedule and budget. Expectations also include contributing professionally by building a professional reputation for technical expertise. Fully applying and interpreting standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies. Contributes technical content to proposals and develops business through excellent project performance. Member of external professional community. Presenter at national or international forums. Leads elements or sections of technical products.
Level III : This position will include all requirements above in addition to those for a level III position. The incumbent will establish local reputation with specialization in at least one S&E domain listed below, including making key contributions in setting technical direction. Incumbent will develop and optimize capabilities at the division level and develop an external reputation. The incumbent will also build effective project teams with membership across a group, S&E domain and/or directorate and contribute the local organization through mentorship of junior staff and taking on operational assignments. Incumbent selects and develops technical approaches on assignments with occasional oversight on complex problems. A level III include being a principal investigator or co-PI on projects or tasks, while integrating capabilities of work team members. Supports scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or major task level. Generates new ideas for proposals and business development opportunities while leading development of technical section of small to medium proposals. Demonstrates ability to acquire funding for self with programmatic impact at the sector and division level. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security.

- BS/BA with 2 years experience, MS/MA/PhD and 0 years of experience in Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry, Radiochemistry, Nuclear Engineering, or related technical field.
For Level S&E3
- BS/BA with 5 years of experience MS/MA with 3 years of experience PhD with 1 year of experience in Analytical Chemistry, Geochemistry, Radiochemistry, Nuclear Engineering, or related technical field.
Position requires technical contributions to projects in national and homeland security, nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear material detection and characterization, environmental monitoring, beginning to build a professional reputation for technical expertise. Independent contributor to projects and/or major project tasks; may have minimal-to-no oversight, independently completing reoccurring assignments, exercising limited judgment on work details.
Working to deepen and broaden own technical knowledge. Continues developing technical expertise and knowledge and developing new skills.

Special/Hazardous Working Conditions or Environment: Complexities related to the position, working environment, special challenges, etc.:
- This position will require work with radioactive materials, potentially in Contamination Area Fume Hoods; therefore, strong radiological worker skills are required. Hazards would be those expected in a traditional wet chemistry lab.
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
