Pacific Northwest National Laboratory User Experience Designer in SEATTLE, Washington
Organization and Job ID
Job ID: 308690
Directorate: National Security
Division: Computing & Analytics
Group: Visual Analytics
We are looking for a User Experience Designer to join our cross-functional teams building software applications and data visualization tools for national security and energy stakeholders. As a UX designer at PNNL, you will collaborate with world-class scientists, researchers, business stakeholders, agile software development teams and end-users to create top-notch user experiences. You will design well-documented concepts, wireframes, user-flows, high-fidelity mockups, interactions and prototypes throughout the product life-cycle. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong knowledge of user-centered design principles and present clear rationale for design decisions through a robust portfolio of useful, useable and desirable designs.
You are a passionate and talented User Experience Designer that has proven yourself within a software development environment. You have strong examples of how your visual and interactive design has made an impact in commercial or research-driven products
You have a strong portfolio that speaks to your role and impact on the products you’ve touched
You are a master in Sketch or Adobe Creative Suite, and maybe have some UI prototyping skills to show off
You can demonstrate creative thinking, strong visual design, software interaction design and the ability to quickly sketch with pen and pencil when needed
You are grounded in User-Centered Design philosophy. You are adept at defining user requirements and use cases that drive your design decisions. You are not afraid to ask hard questions around how the software is making an impact in a user’s workflow. You are the users' advocate in the software development process in design, specification and user evaluation
You can effectively communicate across the stakeholder spectrum. You are a “people person”; you can communicate with clients and geeks alike. You’ve got “street cred” with developers, getting technical with the best of them to ensure mockups become beautiful, working software artifacts. At PNNL, working with renowned scientists means you’ll often have to understand the science before digging your teeth into a project. Likewise, you’ve got some business acumen--as a UX leader you effectively bring together technical experts, product managers and clients toward a common, results-oriented goal at a feature level
You are entrepreneurial and not afraid to take on hard and complex user experience challenges. Here you can define your future and what projects you work on. You are proactive about seeking out opportunities and opening doors. You are someone who wants to influence their own career development through projects that you take on
You’re looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and different subject domains, and where a job title is not considered the final definition of who you are, but the starting point
Collaborating with multi-disciplinary team to define user interaction and workflow models for research and product features.

Success in this role means delivering results through strong interaction and visual design, teamwork and a relentless focus on what’s best for our users

Success is walking into PNNL every work day with a belief that you can have a positive impact in the research and development efforts at a national laboratory and that your work makes a difference with our clients and users
