Job Description

The Visual Analytics Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a User Experience Designer to join our cross-functional project teams building software applications and data visualization tools for national security and energy stakeholders. As a UX designer at PNNL, you will collaborate with world-class scientists, researchers, business stakeholders, agile software development teams and users to create world-class user experiences. You will collect user requirements through subject-matter expert and user interviews and workshops. You will design well-documented concepts, wireframes, user-flows, high-fidelity mockups, interactions, prototypes and design specifications throughout the product life-cycle. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong knowledge of user-centered design principles and present clear rationale for design decisions through a robust portfolio of useful, usable and desirable designs .

This position is full-time and may be based in either Richland or Seattle, Washington.


  • Build reputation through application of UX principles and theories and develop technical approaches to solve challenges.

  • Effectively team to share resources and optimize research and development at the group and division level.

  • Mentor junior staff and students.

  • Receive guidance on new assignments, make preliminary selections on technical alternatives, independently complete recurring assignments.

  • Support scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or major task level.

  • Define and lead project work at a small task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget.

  • Contribute to proposals and project plans.

  • Embrace expectations for quality, safety, and security.

  • Lead elements or sections of technical products.

A more senior User Experience Designer will:

  • Select and develop technical approaches on assignments with occasional oversight on complex problems.

  • Generate new ideas for proposals and/or business development opportunities while leading development of technical section of small to medium proposals or project plans.

  • Serve as a role model for quality, safety, and security.

  • Be a leader of technical products that have a direct impact on our users and stakeholders.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

  • Level II: Leads specific tasks of the project to meet scope, schedule and budget. Expected to contribute professionally, building a professional reputation for technical expertise. Fully applying and interpreting standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies. Contributes technical content to proposals and develops business through excellent project performance.

  • Level III: Established reputation in applying software engineering principles towards user experience design. Builds and leads effective project teams across domains. Organizational contributions through mentorship or taking on special assignments. Selects and develops technical approaches on complex problems. Lead of projects or tasks, integrating capabilities of work team members. Generates new ideas for proposals and/or business development opportunities, leading development of proposals or project plans.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 2 years of experience, or MS/MA with 0 years of experience, or PhD with 0 years of experience, or Relevant Associate’s degree and 6 years of relevant work experience, or High school diploma and 10 years of relevant work experience

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance (see below).

  • Strong portfolio of visual and interactive design showing a clear impact in commercial, industrial, or research environments, demonstrated through a clear human-centered design process.

  • Proficiency in standard UX software (such as Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, OmniGraffle, Axure, InVision, UXPin, Balsamiq, Framer) is a must. Basic HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript skills are a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 5 years of experience, or MS/MA with 3 years of experience, or PhD with 1 year of experience

  • Passionate and talented in User Experience Design proven within a multi-disciplinary software development environment.

  • Creative thinking, strong visual design, software interaction design and the ability to quickly sketch with pen and pencil when needed. Ability to draw, sketch, ideate and storyboard are a plus.

  • Demonstrated experience as a “UX team of one” performing activities throughout the research, design, and delivery process.

  • Demonstrated experience designing complex desktop and mobile applications.

  • Experience providing UX artifacts in an agile development cycle, including product planning, writing user stories and acceptance criteria, design specifications and assets.

  • Grounding in User-Centered Design philosophy; adept at defining user requirements and use cases to drive design decisions.

  • Advocacy for users demonstrated in the software development process throughout design, specification, and user evaluation.

  • Effective communication across the stakeholder spectrum; a “people person” who can communicate with clients and technical experts and developers.

  • Experience with data visualization or designing visual analytics systems a plus.

  • Educational or professional background in science, engineering, human-computer interaction or data analytics a plus.
