The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking an undergraduate intern to assist the Seattle Director in identifying opportunities to advance PNNL’s mission through partnerships in the Seattle metro area.
The intern will work closely with the Director to compile and analyze data about the Lab and about federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs) to build a narrative for the future of urban research institutes and related strategic opportunities with local commercial and academic neighbors. The portfolio of opportunities will include energy, cybersecurity, and other areas where PNNL’s expertise in complex systems modeling and data analytics – combined with subject matter expertise in chemistry, physics, biology, computational sciences, materials science, and climate and earth systems science.
Specific duties include (a) web-based research on current and future trends for scientific research; (b) research into other FFRDCs and the Department of Energy regarding their programs and aspirations; (c) consultation with diversity & inclusion leaders plus economic development organizations on urban PNNL opportunities; (d) collaborating with the Director to develop on building a narrative for the future of the urban FFRDC and the future of PNNL in Seattle.
This project will be an hourly paid position working part-time from February/March until summer 2020. During the summer months this position is expected to be full-time. The position will be located in Seattle.
Candidates must be degree-seeking students enrolled at an accredited college or university. Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall GPA of 2.5.
Capable written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
Initiative to collaborate with others and execute independent tasks in a timely manner
Subject matter expertise in data analytics is a plus, as is familiarity with industry, academic, or non-profit research organizations.
Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program in a political science, economics, data analytics, or a technology policy field. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 is preferred.
