Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking an undergraduate co-op student to support several federal-funded projects that focus on engaging stakeholders, developing user requirements and implementing solutions to important problems in national security and public safety. Of the two projects the student may support, one is focused on developing a research agenda for the US and UK on beneficial uses of autonomous systems for public safety missions and the other is focused on conducting testing and evaluation and collecting end-user feedback on a variety of technologies developed for various operational missions.

The student may also support several US Department of State funded efforts that focus on capacity building of public security professionals and emergency managers in partner nations.

Research analysts at PNNL address critical national and global issues by applying research methods and approaches to complex issues that cross multiple domains. Research areas of interest includes the development, implementation, and resulting analyses related to quantitative social science, national security and public safety, domestic and global disaster response and recovery, and technology assessment and landscape analysis.

This is an exceptional opportunity to gain hand-on experience applying research and analytical skills acquired in an academic setting to some of our nation’s most important challenges in national security. The student will work with work on interdisciplinary teams consisting of subject matter experts and research analysts from a wide variety of educational backgrounds.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills with ability to prioritize work assignments and meet competing deliverables while still delivering a top-quality product.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Demonstrate ability to work in a team environment as well as the ability to work effectively and efficiently with moderate oversight in a fast paced dynamic and evolving environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be degree-seeking students enrolled at an accredited college or university. Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall GPA of 2.5.

Preferred Qualifications

Applicable candidate should be at least a third-year undergraduate student with strong interest in pursuing a career in Economics, International Affairs, Security and Resilience, Urban Informatics, or Political Science. Proven analytical, writing, research, presentation and strong inter-personal skills as they will be working with a diverse team. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, file management, and complex databases. Excels at working independently and as part of a team, maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and stakeholders.

Other Information:

This position is in the Seattle, PNNL, BSRC office. To be qualified, applicants must be in the NU Co-op program and cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher preferred. Candidates must be available from 01/2020-06/2020.
