The Environment, Health and Safety & Security Division is seeking an experienced professional to lead the PNNL Worker Safety & Health Group (WS&H). The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of EHS&S professionals dedicated to the safe and secure conduct of research in accordance with the highest standards of safety, health, and environmental stewardship.
The WS&H Group Leader is responsible for establishing PNNL worker safety and health programs to assist line and operations management in assuring that a safe and healthful workplace is provided to all employees, visitors, vendors, and subcontractors of the Laboratory. The incumbent establishes systems to identify, evaluate, and control hazards in the workplace and provides direct technical assistance to those conducting work. Interfaces directly with staff and management at all levels, and with external stakeholder including DOE-PNSO line management and EHS&S staff. Responsible for assuring that programs are consistently rated “excellent” or “outstanding” by both internal and external customers. Maintains balance between compliance, customer satisfaction and budget constraints without compromising worker or public safety.
Principle responsibilities include:
Identify and document PNNL operating requirements pertaining to WS&H and translate them into efficient and effective implementations for the safe conduct of research in accordance with the highest standards of safety, health, and environmental stewardship
Manage WS&H program performance to provide confidence that the minimum requirements to meet regulatory and business objectives are being met
Develops and directs Team Leads for WS&H Programs, Services and Safety Engineering; responsible for planning, staffing, budgeting, managing expense priorities for the efficient and effective implementation of Laboratory safety programs
Translates PNNL strategy into implementable actions; accountabilities and performance directly support the achievement of Laboratory notable outcomes
Regularly interacts with executives and/or major stakeholders and maintains relationships with PNSO, DOE-HQ and peers at other DOE National Laboratories
Negotiates with customers or management and attempts to influence senior level leaders regarding matters of significance to the organization to achieve business results.
- Bachelor's degree and 12+ years of relevant experience, or Advanced degree and 10+ years of relevant experience.
Advanced degree with and emphasis in Industrial Safety, Public Health, or Engineering
One or more credentials such as: Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional or Licensed Professional Engineer
Demonstrated experience in leading multidisciplinary teams to implement safety & health programs in accordance with 10 CFR 851 in support of Research and Facility Operations
Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to productively collaborate with a diverse workforce with widely varying experience and education
