Job Description

The Disruptive Technology group focuses on emerging technologies by integrating capability across electromagnetics, systems modeling, communications, analytics development, and systems design to serve as a flywheel for feeding technology advancements across the division and laboratory. Projects within the group range from mission focused, highly applied projects in support of national security to fundamental science projects.

The candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team focused on developing and analyzing all elements of high-performance wireless digital communication systems or radar imaging systems from antenna to protocol level.

  • Applying communication systems knowledge to a broad range of scientific and national security missions

  • Providing detailed recommendations, designs, and roadmaps for network and service solutions based on different use cases for 5G, working closely with cross-functional SMEs

  • Participating in technical design reviews and element/system level activities

  • Developing experimental network designs and associated experiments to perform research and analysis of technology, standards and stakeholders’ requirements.

  • Continuously evolving relevant knowledge and skillset to stay abreast of innovation in wireless technology and providing expert guidance on same to the organization at large

  • Assisting in developing communication simulations that provide insights into the development and deployment of Advanced Wireless Communication systems.

  • Level 4 : Uses established cross organizational network, external peers, and clients to further outcomes. Leading organizational teams that proactively identify and promote new capabilities within a division and S&E domain, and advance the directorate strategy. Mentoring staff and peers across directorate. Selects and develops technical approaches to complex challenges. Principal investigator or co-PI on multiple or significantly complex, and/or high risk projects or tasks and/or involving multiple tasks, capabilities, and organizations. Demonstrates ability to acquire funding for self and task level teams.

  • Level 5: Establishes network across PNNL, other national laboratories, academia, industry, and professional societies. Collaborates with other Labs, academia, industry and leads multi-Lab projects Leader in the development and execution of directorate strategies. Sought out to lead laboratory teams that influence operations and strategies. Conceives, plans, and executes R&D with considerable influence on scientific and technological developments. Displays considerable leadership in defining scientific and technical objectives across programs. Leads in the capture, planning, and technical execution of complex interdisciplinary projects and programs across organizational boundaries with lab level impact, and outside of the laboratory. Captures and enables sufficient funding to support self and project teams.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 7 years of experience MS/MA with 5 years of experience PhD with 3 years of experience in Electrical Engineering or equivalent from accredited university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 9 years of experience MS/MA with 7 years of experience PhD with 5 years of experience.

  • Experience building and analyzing engineering solutions.

  • Demonstrates technical leadership in at least one aspect of 4G or 5G communication systems.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of advanced wireless communication adoption and systems across the globe.

  • Demonstrates technical expertise in hardware capabilities, software requirements, and systems integration.

  • Familiar with radio related test equipment such as spectrum analyzers, vector signal analyzers, vector signal generator, network analyzers, and software defined radios (SDRs).

  • Experience running experiments, documenting results and drafting reports.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
