The Hydrology Group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory develops resilient and sustainable solutions for complex, national and global scale challenges in energy and water systems using advanced computational modeling, sensor development and deployment, and novel geospatial and data analytics. We seek candidates who are interested in tackling complex challenges and who are able to contribute to the advancement of energy and water system science that is of importance nationally and internationally. The successful candidate will have the potential to support of variety of research conducted within the Hydrology group, including subsurface modeling and simulation in support of environmental remediation; computational fluid dynamic simulation support for river systems and hydropower operations; enhancements of interdisciplinary models (e.g., production cost models) to represent changing environmental constraints and dependencies imposed by climate change; utilize integrated, multi-scale models to explore and quantify the benefits of novel water and energy management strategies; enhance and use modeling and simulation tools used to provide rapid response situational awareness during extreme events.

  • Applies basic S&E theories to well defined tasks with minimal oversight. Requires conceptual knowledge of scientific or engineering theories, practices and procedures within specialization.

  • Working locally as an individual contributor. Building and maintaining effective internal relationships on individual or team level.

  • Topical Reports

  • Peer-reviewed Publications

  • patents/intellectual property

  • Software/Data Artifacts

  • Hardware/Materials/ Electronics Artifacts

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 0-1 years of experience

  • MS/MA with 0-1 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS/MA in technically relevant discipline (e.g., Civil Engineering, Hydrolog or related)

  • Experience in one or more models relevant to the research (e.g., MODFLOW, HEC-RAS, Delft-3D,VIC)

  • Experience using or developing water resource management models (e.g, RiverWare, OASIS, STELLA, HEC-Res, MODSIM).

  • Fluency in one or more programming and scripting languages (e.g., GAMS, bash, perl, python, FORTRAN, C).

  • Fluency with LINUX operating system.

  • Experience working in an inter-disciplinary team and/or with water or power agencies.

  • Demonstrated success of articulating research through publications, particularly in top-tier journals.
