Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking co-op students for positions in support of a variety of federally-funded projects to apply Operations Research/Data Science to important problems in national security.

Operations researchers/data scientists at PNNL perform model-informed and data-driven research and discovery to support decision- and policy-making at all levels, and facilitated by the tools and techniques of computational modeling and statistics, simulation, optimization/math programming, and data analytics for national security systems. Of particular interest is a focus on advanced and emerging simulation tools and mathematical methods that can be applied to various Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DoD), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) processes and concepts of operations. Specific modeling focus areas include risk, resilience, and deterrence modeling and quantification related to a number of national security domains including radiological and nuclear terrorism, bioterrorism threats, cyber and cyber-physical threats, and critical infrastructure. At times, this position may require interactions with government, military, and industry officials nationwide for a variety of programs, projects, and tasks, including technical and programmatic concept development, planning, coordination, integration, and execution that can be supported by modeling and simulation methodologies.

This is an exceptional opportunity to gain rich experience applying operations research/data science to some of our nation’s most important challenges in national security and to work alongside of national recognized scientists at PNNL. Some of our project needs include:

  • Risk modeling and risk quantification related to assessments of radiological and nuclear terrorism and bioterrorism threats

  • Application of game theory to deter potential adversaries

  • Modeling security screening processes pertinent to passengers and baggage at airports

  • Simulating pedestrians and analyzing resources requirements for safely checking and monitoring large scale venues

  • Modeling and simulation of cyber consequences due to infrastructure system disruptions

  • Simulation modeling of radiation portal screening at various locales; and of other operational processes (e.g., logistical supply chains/depot maintenance repair processes, etc.).

Each student will work with experience PNNL scientists on multiple projects with leading national security domain systems. You will work on interdisciplinary teams consisting of co-ops, graduate students, and operational researchers and related discipline scientists at PNNL. You will gain strong insight and experience in operations research and industrial engineering - invaluable as you start your careers.

Positions are available in Richland, WA and Seattle, WA based on business need.
