Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking co-op students for positions in support of a variety of federally-funded projects to apply Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning/Data Science to important problems in national security.

Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data scientists at PNNL address critical national and global issues by applying scientific and mathematical techniques to multiple data sources and communicating their findings to our sponsors and the greater academic community. Research of interest includes the development, implementation, and resulting analyses related to quantitative social science, human language technologies, applied machine learning, real-time streaming algorithms, national security, disaster response and recovery, health security, image/video understanding, cyber security, semantic networks and other related fields.

This is an exceptional opportunity to gain rich experience applying artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science to some of our nation’s most important challenges in national security and to work alongside nationally recognized scientists at PNNL. Each student will work with leading PNNL scientists and work on interdisciplinary teams consisting of co-ops, graduate students, subject matter experts and data scientists at PNNL. You will gain strong insight and experience in data science - invaluable as you start your career.

Positions are available in Richland, WA and Seattle, WA based on business need.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be degree-seeking students enrolled at Northeastern University. Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall GPA of 2.5.

U.S. citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications

The selected student will have responsibility for supporting the development of high-quality modeling, simulation, and analysis products that will ultimately be delivered to government sponsors. The position therefore requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated ability for writing concisely and clearly. The candidate must be able to apply theories, principles, methods, tools, and technologies of the field and work effectively in a team environment.

Successful candidates will possess skills in artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, data science and related disciplines with some computer programming. The following skills are also desired: be familiar with existing deep learning and machine learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, scikit-learn, and CNTK); have experience applying machine learning to domain specific applications, such as text mining, graph analytics, social network analysis, etc.; have the ability to contribute that knowledge to the academic and research strength of PNNL and have experience writing scientific publications.

They will have the ability to work independently and in groups, possess time management skills, commitment to excellence, a "can do" work ethic, and a desire to make a difference. High quality work standards and task completion are expectations for continued employment. Good technical writing skills or experience coding in Python is a plus. Additional preferred skills include:

  • Effective written and oral communication is required

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively on diverse teams are required

  • Proven ability to work independently and to quickly adapt to new scientific environments

Preferred Education:

  • Working on degree in computer science, applied mathematics, machine learning or closely related field

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher desired
