The Applied Materials and Manufacturing group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking an experienced tool and die designer to support research in innovative manufacturing approaches. The position holder will help develop new solid-phase processes for forming and joining metals that are both highly efficient and result in higher performance materials. The products of our research will be found in next-generation lightweight vehicles, more durable and corrosion-resistant materials for power plants, and other commercial systems. The position holder will:
Design or modify the designs of tools used for Shear-Assisted Processing and Extrusion and for friction stir welding/processing to achieve specific outcomes
Collaborate with researchers to understand the relationship between tooling and design and product quality
Support experimental work in the laboratory
Create drawings and support fabrication of tooling
Originate and contribute to PNNL intellectual property in this area.
The position will solve problems that are sufficiently complex to require novel or unique solutions and new or emerging technologies. The position will work with scientists and engineers with a diversity of backgrounds to develop approaches on multiple machines with a variety of materials. In addition, the selected candidate will be expected to lead tasks and coordinate the work of others as needed and mentor other staff in their area of expertise. Applicants must be able to complete assigned tasks with limited guidance, exercising considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to their assignments. The position holder will contribute to publications and presentations and make contributions of major significance to the accomplishment of research projects.
BS/BA with 5 years of relevant work experience, or advanced degree with 2-3 years of relevant work experience. Extensive relevant work experience (10+ years) coupled with certifications may be substituted for the degree requirement under some circumstances.
10 years’ or more experience in extrusion and/or forging tool and die design
Experience in light metals
Previous experience in a research or other first-of-a-kind environment is helpful but not required
Ability to generate and modify mechanical drawings
