The Disruptive Technology group focuses on emerging technologies by integrating capability across electromagnetics, systems modeling, communications, analytics development, and systems design to serve as a flywheel for feeding technology advancements across the division and laboratory. Projects within the group range from mission focused, highly applied projects in support of national security to fundamental science projects.
The DT group is seeking qualified candidates to work as part of team including senior technicians, engineers and scientists in the R&D process; including, equipment design/fabrication, purchasing, testing, and laboratory operations.
The ideal candidate is a well-organized, self-starter, with a high capacity for attention to detail. Verbal and written communication skills, as well as strong time management skills, are essential in order to balance activities among several concurrently operating projects. The candidate will have a high dgree of hands on capability to address many of the electrical and mechanical needs of the R&D process.
The following are required skills for the position:
Electrical competency –
Must understand the installation and trouble-shooting of a variety of electrical hardware.
The ability to use electrical troubleshooting tools, such as a digital volt meter, to confirm operation of low-voltage (< 50 VDC) power supplies and check circuits for proper signals, voltage levels and circuit continuity. Must be able to check fuses and continuity of low-voltage or unenergized systems. Responsible for receiving basic electrical safety training.
Must be able to read and assemble components from electrical layout drawings and schematics. The candidate should have the ability to order and specify general low voltage (<120V) electrical components.
Mechancial competency -
Basic mechanical skills, able to assemble components of test systems under the guidance of senior technicians or engineering staff.
Must be familiar with basic hand and power tools, drill press and band saw. Responsible for ordering lab and shop supplies as needed.
Must be able to read and assemble components from mechanical layout drawings. Responsible for interfacing with crafts personnel and outside vendors in the process of fabricating components and specifying/acquiring mechanical hardware and materials.
General competency -
Responsible for following written test plans associated with a working laboratory process. Must be able to record data in a lab notebook and communicate off-normal problems to senior staff. Must be able to work alone in a safe and secure manner during normal and extended working hours following laboratory protocols.
The ability to multitask between multiple projects and tasking.
Following written and verbal instructions in independently completing tasks assigned by senior staff.
Specifying materials for purchase and submitting related orders.
Accurately estimating time required to complete tasks, and meet deadlines as assigned.
Participating constructively and taking ownership in the success of interdisciplinary project teams.
Due to project and client requirements, US citizenship is required with the ability to obtain and maintain a US Department of Energy Clearance in the future.
The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:
Level II : Basic electrical and mechanical skills, able to assemble components of test systems under the guidance of senior technicians or other staff. Familiar with basic hand and power tools. Able to read and assemble components from both mechanical and electrical layout drawings.
Level III : Intermediate mechanical skills to assemble more complex test systems made up of various sub-components, vacuum systems and leak checking. Extensive experience with hand and power tools, in addition to other basic shops tools (e.g., drill press, band saw, etc.). Able to use a multi-meter to check voltages and circuit continuity. Able to produce basic mechanical drawings using 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.) needed for shop fabrication. Able to produce wiring diagrams for control systems and instrument panels using software tools (i.e. AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, other, etc.).
High school diploma and 2+ years of relevant work experience or Technical Institute Graduate/relevant associate degree and 1+ years of relevant work experience.
In addition, skills in the following areas are preferred and the candidate may be expected to gain experience in the following:

Must have extensive experience with hand and power tools, in addition to other basic shops tools (e.g., drill press, band saw, etc.).
Must be able to produce basic mechanical drawings using 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.) needed for shop fabrication.
Must be able to produce wiring diagrams using CAD software (i.e. AutoCAD, SolidWorks Electrical, other, etc) for control systems and instrument panels.. Experience in collecting and recording test data from completed test systems.
Work as part of a diverse team in establishing test processes for laboratory and field experiments. Responsible for operating computer-controlled systems, which requires a basic level of computer skills (file/folder structures, viewing data files, etc.).
Requires the ability to trouble-shoot and fix basic off-normal issues in order to maintain test schedules. Must be able to follow laboratory safety and security procedures while operating and trouble-shooting systems.
Basic understanding of computer hardware, including hardware interfacing to a computer.

- Laboratory work performed will include assembly and operation of equipment potentially involving flammable and toxic materials, high-temperatures, and high-pressures, Ionizing & non-ionizing radioactive sources.
