Job Description

This position supports the Risk and Decision Sciences Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). This position provides support to test and evaluation activities including but not limited to the Common Operating and Response Environment (CORE) technologies via participation in multidisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers. The Common Operating and Response Environment (CORE) Data-Collection System is a highly configurable web-based system made up of broadly applicable modules for rapid setup and customization. CORE design is derived from extensive experience in information integration, data-access applications, field-data collections, and operational analysis. The team uses a web-based platform to provide globally accessible data forms, bring together diverse data streams, and provide information in context to users. The successful candidate will provide foundational understanding in the styling, configuration, and documentation of software systems supporting test and evaluation and other projects in the Risk & Decision Sciences Group.

Responsibilities :

The incumbent will generally work under the guidance of senior scientists and engineers. In addition to high-quality support for customers, a critical part of the position is the ability to quickly and effectively develop and demonstrate skills and abilities that will lead to growth in responsibilities and career progression. The incumbent will implement effective analytical, problem-solving skills, and time-management skills in a research and development environment to:

  • Test and configure content management software system settings and options.

  • Operate and maintain hardware such as GPS systems, sensor systems, rad nuc devices, and work any integrations with software systems.

  • Perform routine quality-control activities and manual testing of development and integration tasks independently.

  • Train others on defined software and hardware testing, configuration, documentation, and related tasks and procedures.

  • Adapt and apply basic engineering procedures for assigned tasks and known processes.

  • Perform non-routine tasks requiring the exercise of independent judgment.

  • Investigate and categorize problems and possible solutions to team leadership. Document observations and ideas in tracking system.

  • Define workflows for codebase development and software and hardware lifecycle management.

  • Investigate bugs/issues and propose solutions, asking for input from senior developers where required.

  • Become intimately familiar with the user needs and business logistics that drive the definition of project requirements.

  • Willingness and ability to maintain professional interactions and travel with coworkers to meet with the sponsor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma and 4+ years of relevant work experience or Technical Institute Graduate/relevant Associate‚Äôs degree and 2+ years of relevant work experience.

  • 2+ year(s) of work experience relating to hardware or software maintenance, configuration, training, and leading others through these activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant experience includes:

  • Experience with web-based software testing and configuration management.

  • Experience developing software documentation for web-based tools.

  • Experience operating, troubleshooting, maintaining, and training others on various hardware

  • Experience in advanced software configuration and working with users, sponsors, and technical team members to solve problems efficiently.

  • Must demonstrate experience in working with technical teams on specific projects and assignments.

  • Past performance must demonstrate attributes of being self-motivated and self-directed.

  • Must demonstrate experience in working with technical teams on specific projects and assignments.

  • Must be able to prioritize activities and complete tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Perform tasks (e.g. software development, configuration, hardware operation) autonomously but know when to seek out advice from others.

  • Experience working with end users to investigate, troubleshoot, and solve their problems.

  • Experience with Confluence, Jira, and agile software development.
