Job Description

Does developing complex computer code, designing new visualizations, optimizing solutions for energy, or working with big data sound compelling to you? Do you want to work side by side with world class researchers?

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high caliber undergraduate students for assignments within the Applied Decision Systems and Analytics Technical Group of the Energy and Environment Directorate. The position is for a summer internship and is flexible with the candidate’s school schedule.

As an intern, you will assist in design and user experience, including the design of interactive prototypes, modern and informative visuals and features, branding, accessibility review, testing and documentation. May also include auditing current user experiences and content upgrades. Opportunities will be given to assist in software design and development, depending on skills/experience. You will work independently and on teams proactively solving problems, create reusable tools, and take initiative to communicate questions and results well.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be degree-seeking students enrolled at an accredited college or university. Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall GPA of 2.5.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Maturity and a high degree of professionalism

  2. Knowledge of web design techniques and tools

  3. Ability to communicate design ideas effectively, excellent verbal and written skills

  4. 3.5 or higher GPA is required

  5. Experience in problem solving, rapidly learning and adapting in a professional environment

  6. General web design, including experience in HTML5 and CSS3

  7. Exposure to design principles for developing engaging and responsive custom websites

  8. Proficient in visual design tools Photoshop and Illustrator. Sketch or other prototyping tools are acceptable

  9. Web Accessibility

  10. Javascript

  11. React and React component libraries such as Ant Design or MaterialUI

  12. Git/Github

  13. Conscientious detail-oriented while having the ability to understand how their work contributes to a larger effort.

  14. Preference will be given to students who have relevant work or internship experience.
