Job Description

This position is responsible for leading and contributing to teams that develop and grow EMSD’s bioimaging and structural biology programs. A recent investment by DOE BER Biological Systems Science Division has enabled EMSD to update its cryo-EM capabilities. Combined with EMSD’s on-site existing and newly acquired high-performance computational resources, there is great potential for making advances in our ability to optimize and/or redesign proteins for a variety of applications.

This position is responsible for:

  • Using established cross organizational networks, external peers, and clients to further outcomes beneficial to the directorate. Leading organizational teams that proactively identify and promote new capabilities within the division and scientific staff domain and advance the directorate strategy. Mentoring staff and peers across directorate. Leading through operational assignments that benefit the group and directorate.

  • Selecting and developing technical approaches to tackle complex problems. Principal investigator or co-PI on multiple or significantly complex, and/or high-risk projects or tasks and/or involving multiple tasks, capabilities, and organizations. Developing and realizing new significant project opportunities, leading to the development of technical sections of large proposals. Taking the lead in scope, schedule, and budget for projects or large tasks.

  • Holding leadership role in professional community. Organizing and chairing sessions at national meetings of professional societies. Lead author or developer on a significant number of technical products. Recognition by sponsors and collaborators for delivery on important programmatic elements.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Level 4: Selects and develops technical approaches to complex challenges. Principal investigator or co-PI on multiple or significantly complex, and/or high-risk projects or tasks and/or involving multiple tasks, capabilities, and organizations. Develops, and realizes new significant project opportunities, leading the development of technical sections of large proposals. Takes lead in scope, schedule, and budget for projects or large tasks

Level 5: Conceives, plans, and executes R&D with considerable influence on scientific and technological developments. Displays considerable leadership in defining scientific and technical objectives across programs. Leads in the capture, planning, and technical execution of complex interdisciplinary projects and programs across organizational boundaries with lab level impact, and outside of the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 7+ years of experience, MS/MA with 5+ years of experience, or PhD with 3+ years of experience.

  • Demonstrated experience leading new and existing research projects that are productive and impactful

  • Demonstrated experience initiating projects, planning, and working independently to complete projects. Demonstrated strong organizational skills.

  • Computer skills, including word processing, web searching, database entry, spreadsheet and/or database creation.

  • Able to work under pressure of deadlines, frequent interruptions, and changing priorities.

  • Research experience in structural biology including computational structural refinement and prediction.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 9+ years of experience, or MS/MA with 7+ years of experience, or PhD with 5+ years of experience.

  • PhD or MS/MA with relevant experience with cryo-EM and biochemistry preferred.

  • 5+ years’ experience in cryo-EM (single particle, micro-ED, tomography).

  • Previous hands-on experience using FEI Titan Krios with energy filter, phase plate and direct electron detectors.
