Job Description

Then join us in the Visual Analytics group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

The Visual Analytics Group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a Senior User Experience Designer to lead our cross-functional project teams, building software applications and data visualization tools for national security and energy stakeholders. As a Sr. UX designer at PNNL, you will collaborate with world-class scientists, researchers, business stakeholders, agile software development teams and end-users to create world-class user experiences. You will collect user requirements through subject-matter expert and user interviews and workshops. You will design well-documented concepts, wireframes, user-flows, high-fidelity mockups, interactions, prototypes and design specifications throughout the product life-cycle. You will help lead a small UX team by example through instrumenting and developing templates in design specification and style guides. You will help broaden the impact of user experience design through business development, internal and external outreach and mentoring of junior staff. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a Design leadership and strong knowledge of user-centered design principles and present clear rationale for design decisions through a robust portfolio of useful, useable and desirable designs .

This position is full-time and based in either Richland or Seattle, Washington.


This position will provide user experience leadership and design support for research scientists, software engineers and application developers in the design and implementation of a diverse set of user experiences. A successful candidate will:

  • Collaborate and provide design leadership of multi-disciplinary teams to define user interaction and workflow models for research and product features

  • Lead project teams to turn observational data and user requirements into creative solutions

  • Interact with government customers to define requirements and demonstrate user-centered design vision.

  • Write and manage use cases that inform design decisions

  • Design innovative solutions to make complex information and interaction as simple to understand as possible

  • Establish new visual design systems, develop new design standards or work within existing styleguides depending on project needs

  • Design high-quality visual assets that can be leveraged in large complex software environments

  • Lead and author design specifications and other artifacts to aid in research and development

  • Create interaction scenarios and storyboards to communicate design ideas

The ideal candidate will also possess qualities such as,

  • An interest, curiosity and technical depth to support user experience design and development and advancement of a variety of applied research and engineered solutions to problems specific to the national security community

  • The ability and the desire to learn new technologies and train others as user experience is a rapidly evolving field

  • Have a strong passion for user experience design and an entreprenueral spirit to build relationships inside and outside of the laboratory.


As a Senior User Experience Designer, a successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Generate new ideas for proposals and/or business development opportunities while leading development of technical section of small to medium proposals or project plans.

  • Effectively lead teams to share resources and optimize research and development at the group and division level.

  • Ability to mentor and lead others.

  • Support scoping, scheduling and budging at a project or capability level.

  • Serve as a role model for quality, safety, and security.

  • Be a leader of technical products that have a direct impact on our users and stakeholder

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

  • Level III : Manages small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks. Integrates intellectual and technical capabilities of work teams. Enhances technical/professional skills of junior staff through active mentoring and training. Generates ideas for new proposals and participates in business development activities

  • Level IV : Selects and develops technical approaches to complex challenges. Principal investigator/Lead or coPI on multiple or significantly complex, and/or high risk projects or tasks and/or involving multiple tasks, capabilities, and organizations. Takes lead in scope, schedule, and budget for projects or large tasks Demonstrates ability to acquire funding for self and task level teams. Leading organizational teams that proactively identify and promote new capabilities within a division and S&E domain, and advance the directorate strategy. Sought after within PNNL for technical leadership to set technical direction.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 5 years of experience, MS/MA with 3 years of experience, or PhD with 1 year of experience. A minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of the required degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 7 years of experience MS/MA with 5 years of experience PhD with 3 years of experience

  • Strong portfolio of visual and interactive design showing a clear impact in commercial, industrial, or research environments, demonstrated through a clear human-centered design process.

  • Proficiency in standard UX software (such as Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite, OmniGraffle, Axure, InVision, UXPin, Balsamiq, Framer) is a must. Basic HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript skills are a plus.

  • Passionate and talented in User Experience Design proven within a multi-disciplinary software development environment.

  • Creative thinking, strong visual design, software interaction design and the ability to quickly sketch with pen and pencil when needed. Ability to draw, sketch, ideate and storyboard are a plus.

  • Demonstrated experience as a “UX team of one” performing activities throughout the research, design and delivery process.

  • Demonstrated experience designing complex desktop and mobile applications.

  • Experience providing UX artifacts in an agile development cycle, including product planning, writing user stories and acceptance criteria, design specifications and assets.

  • Grounding in User-Centered Design philosophy; adept at defining user requirements and use cases to drive design decisions.

  • Advocacy for users demonstrated in the software development process throughought design, specification and user evaluation.

  • Effective communication across the stakeholder spectrum--a “people person”; who can communicate with clients and technical experts alike.

  • Soft skills for interacting and negotiating with developers.

  • Experience with data visualization or designing visual analytics system a plus.

  • Educational or professional background in science, engineering, human-computer-interaction or data analytics a plus.
