Job Description

The Applied Materials and Manufacturing group is seeking a senior research engineer to be part of our team of experts in solid phase processing (SPP). This is an opportunity to be part of an internationally recognized, interdisciplinary research program that is advancing the state of the art in metals manufacturing for a variety of technology applications and markets. Our research ranges from understanding the physics of microstructural evolution in materials to the application of this knowledge to develop scalable manufacturing platforms that can deliver materials and components with exceptional performance while using less energy. We are particularly focused on processes that create high strain conditions during synthesis – conditions that are inherent to SPP methods.

This position will work with SPP technologies: friction stir, shear-assisted processing and extrusion (ShAPE), and/or cold spray. The candidate will lead research teams and develop and propose new ideas. He or she will provide technical direction to research projects, collaborate broadly with highly diverse research teams, manage project execution, and mentor junior staff. The position holder will participate in the larger technical community by authoring manuscripts for publication and presenting at (and organizing sessions at) national meetings. He or she will also be expected to originate and develop intellectual property that can be patented and licensed commercially.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Level 3: Established local reputation and developing external reputation with specialization in at least one technical domain. Builds effective project teams internally and serves as principal investigator or co-PI on projects or tasks, while integrating capabilities of work team members. Supports scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or major task level. Generates new ideas for proposals and business development opportunities while leading development of technical sections of small to medium proposals. Mentors junior staff.

Level 4: Expert in at least one technical domain, with the ability to connect multiple domains. Sought after for technical leadership to select and develop approaches to complex challenges. Uses established cross organizational network, external peers, and clients to further outcomes. Principal investigator or co-PI on multiple or significantly complex, and/or high risk projects or tasks and/or involving multiple tasks, capabilities, and organizations. Develops and realizes new significant project opportunities, leading the development of technical sections of large proposals. Takes lead in scope, schedule, and budget for projects or large tasks. Mentors junior staff and peers. Recognized by sponsors and collaborators for delivery on important program elements

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 5 years of experience, MS/MA with 3 years of experience, or PhD with 1 year of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 7 years of experience, MS/MA with 5 years of experience, PhD with 3 years of experience

  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, materials science, metallurgy, or related field with 5 years of industrial or national research laboratory experience, or MS/MA with 7 years of similar experience.

  • An emerging professional reputation for technical expertise and technical leadership within the solid phase processing field or in related thermomechanical processing approaches.

  • Experience in writing proposals and as principal investigator or co-PI on projects or tasks.

  • Demonstrated record of publication in top-tier journals and an ability to collaborate and lead within a teaming environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate research motivation, approach selection, and results to a variety of audiences.
