Job Description

The Integrative Omics team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a Software Engineer to develop new applications supporting scientific data management. The successful candidate will design, develop, document, test, and deploy applications in a Linux-based server environment. Ability to contribute to software development efforts as part of a larger team is expected.

The software engineer will support fundamental science research programs generating high-throughput data for environmental microbiology. This position involves creating new software tools to aggregate data from a diverse set of sources, including databases and web services. The successful candidate will work with data curators to design and implement software to retrieve, filter, and archive data, including, but not limited to, peptides and proteins, metabolites, and lipids. The position involves collaboration with senior scientists and web developers to design and implement services that allow scientists to query, retrieve, analyze, visualize, and export data of interest.

The ideal candidate will be proficient in one or more languages (Python, Java) and will have demonstrated the ability to create robust software solutions. A proven track record of well-crafted, documented source code is required. Database development and design experience is preferred, owing to the needs of aggregating and archiving related data. The candidate should have excellent communication skills with a demonstrated interest in multi-disciplinary, collaborative research.

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA with 0-1 years of experience; MS/MA with 0-1 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 2 years of experience

  • Knowledge of or experience with web application (full-stack) development concepts, including software tools, methods, and platforms.

  • Experience programming in Python, PHP, Java, Linux command line, etc.

  • Knowledge of or experience with relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite).

  • Comfortable with a DevOps approach to software development.

  • Ability to develop and maintain software applications for both client to server and web deployment, including continuous integration and version control.

  • Scientific data management experience.
