PNNL is looking for a savvy digital communicator with expertise and a successful track record in social media to expand PNNL’s presence, build awareness, and increase engagement with key audiences. The Social Media and Community Manager will develop an overarching social media strategy and is responsible for building and monitoring PNNL’s social media presence across a number of online channels including, but not limited to, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Reddit.
The Social Media and Community Manager works with the Director of News and Media and key staff to create and implement a strategic digital outreach plan with goals, objectives, and tactics for both day-to-day efforts and special campaigns. The ideal candidate holds a deep understanding of social media techniques and is a master content creator and curator. The candidate will leverage PNNL’s digital properties to increase awareness of the mission-critical science conducted at PNNL and stimulate positive sharing and discussion of PNNL, its people, and their work.
This is a hybrid role requiring core capabilities in strategy, project management, and creativity—all rooted in a passion for storytelling and building social media communities. Success also hinges on the ability to build positive and trusted relationships with fellow communications and research staff at PNNL.
The position, develops and executes strategic communications plans, campaigns or programs that build the Laboratory’s scientific reputation, result in national and international recognition, and contribute to the financial success of the Laboratory
The role demonstrates integration with the Laboratory and Directorate’s strategy, and drives business development, operational excellence, and staff engagement, in partnership with senior management or key clients
The position plans and directs development of information designed to keep targeted publics informed of Laboratory or Directorate specific programs, accomplishments, or point of view
It collaborates with other communications functions to enable effective development of integrated public relations and communications plans
Authority and Accountability
Develop an overarching organic social media strategy and execute accordingly
Manage day-to-day posting on PNNL’s main channels, including scheduling social media posts and managing workflows using Sprout
In partnership with the newsroom team, develop and post content that reflects the PNNL brand, aligns with goals, resonates with key audiences, and stimulates action
Conceptualize powerful content ideas for social media, write copy, and collaborate with creative team to generate audio, photographic, video, and other multimedia content
Act as champion and leader of the PNNL voice in key social channels, assuring tone and visuals are consistent across campaigns
Engage with key audiences, building and nurturing online communities. Monitor and reply to inquiries received via social media (reviews, comments, likes, mentions, etc.)
Establish and lead community management strategy and oversight that encourages positive engagement of members and deftly handles sensitive interactions
Analyze social media trends and use data to optimize efforts
Establish appropriate KPI goals and provide reports on metrics. Continually find ways to improve on those metrics through testing and implementing new initiatives
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated experience planning, creating, and curating content for social media for a large, complex organization
Proven expertise with social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Reddit
Ability to study, understand, and reflect the perspective of PNNL’s key audiences, including sponsors
A track record of identifying and engaging influencers
Proficiency with industry-standard tools for social media distribution, research, and tracking (Sprout, Hootsuite, TweetDeck, etc.)
Ability and willingness to monitor and respond to social media posts outside of regular working hours
Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced, collaborative, ever-changing environment, always bringing humor, tact, and professionalism
The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Internal and external contacts often pertain to organization plans and objectives.
Bachelor's degree in communications, English, journalism, or related field, plus five years of experience, or an advanced degree plus two years of experience generating and managing social media content for a large-sized organization
Exceptional communication and project management skills
A black belt in planning across social media channels
Experience preparing and presenting reports that quickly communicate operational status, progress toward goals, and key issues
Mastery in analysis of social content performance, benchmarking, and audience insights to inform longer-term strategic decisions for content and platforms
Keen ability to implement new strategies and stay on the cutting edge of industry trends
Bachelor's degree plus seven years of experience or advanced degree plus four years of experience
Experience moving a mission forward in scientific or technical communications, particularly in a national laboratory or other complex, research-based organization
Success setting up and managing social media channels within the science and technology domain
Experience producing and editing video and/or podcasts for social media
