Job Description

The Chemical Biology and Exposure Science Team within the Biological Sciences Division at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a senior research scientist (Associate Professor Equivalent) or principal research scientist (Professor Equivalent) with multidisciplinary experience in biomedical research to lead emerging research programs in the genomic and/or mechanistic basis for human resilience to disease, and environmental and physical stress. The candidate would join a large, uniquely collaborative, collegial group of scientists in the fields of chemical biology, computational biology, computational chemistry, deep learning, panomics, bioinformatics, toxicology and infectious disease.

The positions have the responsibilities and expectations of an associate professor or professor: Establish and grow scientific programs, built multi-disciplinary teams across the research organization, contribute to ongoing research programs, mentor and grow junior staff, establish or maintain a national reputation, build collaborations and train post-docs and students. While this position is equivalent to an associate professor or professor position, PNNL does not have titled professor positions. PNNL actively support joint appointments with academic institutions across the U.S.

The selected candidate will have skills in one or more of these areas:

Experience in developing and using genomic tools common to precision medicine, novel biological systems for conducting mechanistic research, or other competitive skills in for disease/susceptibility research. While competency in modern data analytics tools are important, experience in the design and conduct of human studies is preferred.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following :

Level IV (Associate Professor Equivalent): Selects and develops technical approaches to complex challenges. Principal investigator or co-PI on multiple or significantly complex, and/or high-risk projects or tasks and/or involving multiple tasks, capabilities, and organizations. Develops, and realizes new significant project opportunities, leading the development of technical sections of large proposals. Takes lead in scope, schedule, and budget for projects or large tasks

Level V (Full Professor Equivalent): Conceives, plans, and executes R&D with considerable influence on scientific and technological developments. Displays considerable leadership in defining scientific and technical objectives across programs. Leads in the capture, planning, and technical execution of complex interdisciplinary projects and programs across organizational boundaries with lab level impact, and outside of the laboratory.

  • Experience developing and leading independent, multi-disciplinary collaborative research as Principle Investigator (PI) or Co-PI on projects or major tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in genetics, toxicology, virology or similar biomedical field with 5 years of post-graduate work experience in genetics, mechanisms of disease, infectious disease or related field desired.

  • Experience in developing and using genomic tools common to precision medicine or environmental medicine.

  • Experience with Department of Defense sponsors, DTRA and DARPA is strongly desired.

  • Experience in the use of genomic or computational tools to identify genetic mechanisms of susceptibility to chemical, physical and social exposures or expertise in the use of similar tools to assess exposures and responses to exposures in human populations.

  • Experience in the design and conduct of human studies.
