Who we are:
Research Computing advances scientific discovery by providing computational tools and expertise to accelerate and demonstrate research outcomes. We support computationally enabled science by providing computational building blocks (e.g., HPC, Machine Learning environments, Data Management Tools etc.). In addition, we provide services, expertise, and support to researchers to optimize their use of our capabilities (e.g., UX, Software Engineering, HPC Consulting, Cloud Deployment, etc.). Lastly fostering a culture of computing through interdisciplinary collaboration, community building, and access to computational resources.
We are seeking a proven and experienced UX Engineer to join the Lab’s UX Community. This person will provide UX leadership working alongside other senior UX engineers to establish a UX Community of Excellence across the Lab. This will encompass influencing User Centric Design (UCD) practices for Sponsor facing, PNNL focused, and campus experience activities. You will be responsible for helping build up UX teams and driving and modeling behaviors to institutionalize solid UCD practices.

These could be in performing work directly for external sponsors, for capability development initiatives, driving culture and practices for how incorporating science and engineering with contemporary work practices, and even in showcasing our campus and unique facilities.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:
Level III: Established reputation in applying software engineering principles towards user experience design. Builds and leads effective project teams across domains. Organizational contributions through mentorship or taking on special assignments. Selects and develops technical approaches on complex problems. Lead of projects or tasks, integrating capabilities of work team members. Generates new ideas for proposals and/or business development opportunities, leading development of proposals or project plans.
Level IV: Manages moderate to large projects and/or major project tasks. Integrates intellectual and technical capabilities of work teams. Enhances technical/professional skills of junior and senior staff through active mentoring and training. Generates ideas for new capabilities and participates in business development activities.
- BS/BA with 5 years’ experience, or MS/MA with 3 years’ experience, or PhD and 1+ years experience
BS/BA with 7 years’ experience, or MS/MA with 5 years’ experience, or PhD and 3+ years experience
Demonstrated success leading others in User Research and Analysis, Ideation, Concept and Detailed Visual Design, Rapid Prototyping, Production, Development & Measurement, and Product Launch.
Experience in leading collaborative teams using a variety of design tools including Adobe Illustrator, Figma, Sketch, and XD etc.
Experience influencing scientists, engineers, and executives in the value of UCD.
Numerous examples of defining and implementing design guides and brands.
