The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking highly qualified candidates with expertise in quantitative risk modeling, and with the drive to apply their skills to an eclectic mix of national challenges. The qualified candidate will become part of a world-class team helping assess and manage the risk to resilient energy production and delivery, to a sustainable global environment, and to effective national security. The successful candidate will also be supporting the development of new sponsor opportunities and the management of risk projects.


  • Have sufficient depth of understanding of risk methods to be comfortable extending them to a wide range of applications, including nuclear energy, cyber security, climate change, national security, natural systems, human factors, renewable energy, regulatory compliance, and complex engineered systems.

  • Interpret standard analytical/engineering theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies, and adaptations of technical alternatives.

  • Assemble multi-disciplinary risk teams and manage and mentor early career staff in accomplishing reviews and building capabilities in risk assessment across applicable PNNL groups.

  • Manage technical products for the project to assure that they are delivered with the required level of quality, timeliness, and cost to meet or exceed program manager and sponsor expectations.

  • Publish research and participate in professional activities that advance the reputation of PNNL as a premier S&T institution.

  • Lead proposal teams for developing business, and managing significant projects/programs.

  • Effectively communicate risk concepts and results, including the preparation of high-quality presentations, reports and papers, being equally comfortable with expert or general audiences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS and 5 years of experience, or an MS and 3+ years of experience, or a PhD and 1-2 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in a technical field, preferably, although not necessarily, Engineering, Operations Research, Statistics, or Economics.

  • Extensive knowledge of and practical experience in use of quantitative risk models. .This would also include an understanding of expert elicitation methods, Monte Carlo analysis, and decision tools.

  • The successful candidate will have a broad range of skills and familiarity with several of the following areas: probability, statistics, decision analysis, risk analysis, modeling and simulation, Multi-Criteria Analysis, and mathematical modeling.

  • Past performance must demonstrate attributes of being self-motivated and self-directed, and must demonstrate experience managing multiple projects and leading interdisciplinary teams.

  • In addition to analytical skills, a successful candidate will have excellent written and oral communications skills and experience in preparing, reviewing, and presenting the results of complex technical reports and recommendation to senior management.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.


  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
