Job Description

  • Senior Radiation Protection Technologist

  • Provide contamination and radiation exposure control.

  • Perform or direct surveys where procedures have not been established or where unusual conditions are expected or when film and special detection equipment are used.

  • May direct and train others.

  • The duties and accountabilities specifically assigned to the Radiation Protection Technologist include:

  • Routine radiological surveillances in lab spaces

  • Radiological surveys in support of work with radioactive materials

  • Contamination and radiation exposure control

  • Air sampling in accordance with laboratory procedures

  • Respond to emergency situations

  • Work in accordance with standard procedures and Radiation Work Permits

  • Monitoring, surveying, and sampling in lab spaces as well as outdoor environments

  • Perform direct surveys where procedures have not been established or where unusual conditions are expected or when special detection equipment is used.

  • Must successfully complete the biennial written test and oral board to qualify as a Radiation Protection Technologist

  • This individual will mentor various disciplines of laboratory personnel working with radioactive materials.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School education or equivalent.

  • AS degree in Nuclear Technology or equivalent, or previous experience as a Navy Engineering Laboratory Technician (ELT), or equivalent previous experience as a Radiation Protection Technologist.

  • Fundamentals of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and science. Normally, high school mathematics through advanced algebra, and at least one semester of high school Physics and one semester of high school Chemistry.

  • Fundamentals of nuclear process systems, operations, and maintenance.

  • Reading and comprehensive level sufficient to follow procedures, prepare survey maps, and write survey reports.

  • Ability to work in a support role, including communicating verbal instructions to others.

  • US Citizenship.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Q Security Clearance.

  • Physical requirements: Must be medically qualified, or be capable of qualifying, to wear approved respiratory protective equipment (air purifying respirator, airline respirator, etc.) Must be able to bend, kneel, and climb a ladder.

  • This is a bargaining unit position and will be under the Battelle/HAMTC Labor Contract. As a condition of employment, the staff member will be required to join the appropriate union affiliated with the Hanford Atomic Metal Trades Council (HAMTC) after 30 days of continuous service and pay union dues or pay agency fees to such union in lieu of joining unless otherwise exempted.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of ten years of health physics or radiation protection related employment.

  • Certification by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists is highly desirable.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Familiarity with standard office suite and radiation protection-related software applications.

Special/Hazardous Working Conditions or Environment:

  • Will work in laboratory spaces used for research with various chemicals as well as radiological materials. This position requires the use of protective equipment during routine work as well as worked planned for special circumstances.

  • Occasional hands-on work with radioactive material, work in radiation fields, and involvement in radiological emergency response organization is required.

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing.
