Job Description

The Detection Systems group is seeking a senior scientist or engineer to contribute to a wide variety of research, development, testing, and evaluation efforts involving radiation detection systems, methodologies and algorithms for threat detection and isotope identification, and data analysis. The successful candidate should have extensive experience in leading radiation detector research, development and testing projects or programs and interaction with government sponsors.

In addition, the candidate should have demonstrated experience in developing technical approaches to complex challenges as a principal investigator on significantly complex and high-risk projects. The candidate will be expected to develop and realize new significant project opportunities through the development and leadership of proposals to sponsors. This position includes experimental and theoretical studies with applications including national and homeland security, nuclear nonproliferation and treaty verification, and nuclear material detection and characterization.

The Detection Systems group supports a number of critical national security missions along with missions relating to environmental monitoring and restoration and industrial technology development. Projects within the research group work range from highly applied projects in support of international treaties and national security to fundamental science projects in the areas of nuclear science and novel sensor technology development. The selected candidate is expected to contribute independently and in collaboration with project teams and program management.

  • Accountable to the Detection Systems Group line management structure

  • Accountable to the project management structure for assigned project-specific tasks

  • Technical resource and mentor to junior staff

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 7 years of experience, a Masters plus 5 years of experience or a Ph.D. degree with at least 3 years of experience is required. Degree in nuclear engineering, physics, chemistry, or other field with a research emphasis on nuclear instrumentation is preferred.

  • Must be a contributing professional who is building a professional reputation for technical expertise

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree with 5+ years of experience beyond the doctorate degree is preferred

  • Experience working directly on projects for the DOE Nuclear Incident Response Program, the DHS Combatting Weapons of Mass Destruction Office (formerly the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office) or the National Nuclear Security Administration is preferred

  • Experience in radiation detection and experimental and theoretical studies

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively on diverse, interdisciplinary teams

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.
