The High Performance Computing Group (HPC) at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a senior scientist to drive research and development of PNNL’s Quantum Information Sciences (QIS) capability. PNNL is driving cutting edge research in QIS systems and applications in a number of domains, including Quantum Chemistry. We are seeking an expert scientist with a passion for the mathematics, theory, and algorithms that will shape the future of QIS across the DOE National Laboratory complex and the ability to lead PNNL’s efforts in this area. Candidates should have technical leadership experience at the national level and the ability to manage complex technical and strategic goals in an effort to build a research organization that will have prominent visibility both inside and outside the laboratory. Hired researchers will work at PNNL’s Richland, Washington campus with scientists across a wide range of scientific areas with the opportunity to form multi-disciplinary collaborations and lead fundamental, high-visibility research that will have deep impact on national computing strategy.
Responsibilities and Accoutabilities for this position include:
To form and lead research teams capable of one or more of the following:
Design and develop algorithms and software for quantum information systems
Advance theories of quantum information sciences
Study the mathematical foundations for quantum information science.
Lead and produce successful proposals, peer-reviewed papers, technical presentations, and other technical artifacts for internal and external use.
Represent PNNL’s quantum information sciences capabilities to external parties, such as funding offices and the broader research community.
Collaborate with researchers both within and outside the laboratory in multi-disciplinary research teams.
Lead teams of researchers in applied theoretical and computational research efforts in quantum information science.
Lead teams of researchers in quantum information sciences, particularly in quantum computing and quantum-enhanced sensing.
Drive business development activities, including the development of proposals targeting funding sources interested in quantum information systems.
Shape PNNL’s research priorities in the area of quantum information sciences.
To train and mentor mid to senior-level researchers.
- BS/BA with 9 years of experience; MS/MA with 7 years of experience; PhD with 5 years of experience
Demonstrated ability to lead research teams, drive successful proposal development, and form multi-disciplinary research collaborations.
Ability to obtain a US security clearance.
