Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is searching for a nationally and/or internationally recognized authority in nuclear science and engineering to add to our market leading applied nuclear research capability. In this role, the incumbent will provide technical leadership in multiple applied areas, including nuclear fuel design and analysis, radiation shielding, reactor physics, criticality, isotopic characterization of nuclear materials, structural integrity of reactor components, fluid mechanics, and advanced computational methods which may include computational modeling of complex phenomena, radiation transport, nuclear physics, data acquisition and processing, advanced numerical methods, and high performance computing algorithms.
In this position, the staff member is expected to work in collaboration with business development leaders to recognize and impact the capture of significant market opportunities outside the Laboratory as well as contribute to long-term strategic planning of technical capabilities that have a measurable impact on national security.
The incumbent will be expected to work effectively in dynamic, multi-disciplinary teams that involve nuclear engineers & scientists, materials scientists, mechanical engineers and statisticians and have the following skills/capabilities:
Strong technical, scientific, and analytical skills combined with a multidisciplinary approach to science and engineering
National and/or international reputation in science and engineering, with a demonstrated ability to attract and carry out R&D programs as evidenced by an extensive publication record or equivalent industry experience and applications.
Demonstrated ability to build and motivate scientific or engineering teams of diverse scientific backgrounds and experiences working on focused problems.
Ability to translate fundamental science to applied problems.
Proven ability to develop and lead groundbreaking scientific and/or engineering research.
Demonstrated success in conceiving and attracting funding for research programs involving multiple principal investigators and funding sources.
Capable of applying excellent communication skills to represent PNNL to high level funding clients within government and industrial organizations.
Experience in managing complex technical projects and customer interactions.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities include:
Working across the Laboratory to represent the full suite of PNNL Nuclear Science and Engineering Research capabilities.
Advancing the current state of knowledge and understanding in the field on a national/international basis.
Maintaining a capability development effort at PNNL to ensure that cutting-edge tools are available for the research community.
Attracting external collaborators to the facilities and expertise at PNNL. This will include maintenance and development of contacts with peers in the energy industry, DOE Labs, and academia.
Establishing Laboratory strategies and leading business development activities to enhance nuclear science research conducted at PNNL.
Leading project assignments to achieve project objectives related to schedule, budget, and quality through the creation and management of multi-disciplinary teams.
Bachelor's degree with 7 years' of experience, or Master's degree with 5 years' of experience or Ph.D. with 3 years of experience.
Technical expert applying intensive and diversified knowledge of scientific or engineering principles in broad areas of assignments and related fields as demonstrated through an extensive publication list
Fully competent in all applications of nuclear science and engineering; exercises an identifiable expertise by making significant and progressive contributions.
Understands and advances the application of the nuclear domain, advancing state of art technologies and concepts
Familiarity with function and operation of nuclear power plants, reactor design, and/or analysis of the mechanical, material, or nuclear performance of said systems
Successful applicants will be a national or international authority in the field
Licensure as a Professional Engineer,certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP), or other distinguishing feature is a plus

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
