Job Description

The Chemical Biology and Exposure Science Team within the Biological Sciences Division at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a senior research scientist (Research Assistant Professor Equivalent) with multisciplinary experience in chemistry, chemical biology and microbiome sciences. The candidate would join a large, uniqeuly collaborative, collegial group of scientists in the fields of chemical biology, microbiome sciences, computational biology, computational chemistry, deep learning, microbiology, panomics, bioinformatics, toxicology and infectious disease. Candidates are expected to have a PhD in chemistry, organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, microbiology or similar biomedical field with 2 years of post-graduate experience in chemical biology, microbiology or related field. Experience in using gnotobiotic mice models for microbiome studies is a positive.

The positions has the responsibilities aand expectations of an research assistant professor: Establish and grow scientific programs, built multi-disciplinary teams across the research organization, contribute to ongoing research programs, mentor and grow junior staff, establish or maintain a national reputation, build collaborations and train post-docs and students. PNNL supports joint appointments with academic anstitutions across the U.S. While this position is equivalent to an associate professor position, PNNL itself does not have titled professor positions.

Ideal candidates have experience in designing and implementing studies in germ-free mice, including humanized mice. While competency in modern data analytics tools are important, experience in the design and conduct of human studies is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 2 years of experience; MS/MA with 0 years of experience; PhD with 0 years of experience

  • Minimum Education Requirement: PhD in chemistry, organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, microbiology or similar biomedical field with 2 years of post-graduate experience in chemical biology, microbiology or related field.

  • Technical Expertise: Skilled professional. Applies, on a broad basis, existing theories, principles, and concepts within their professional field.

  • Level of Responsibility: Develop and lead independent, multi-disciplinary collaborative research. Principle Investigator (PI) or Co-PI on projects or tasks. Mentors staff and engages with sponsors.

  • Breadth of Technical Knowledge: Proactively stays abreast of leading developments the field, and leads externally in the development new scientific directions. Maintains skills consistent with state of the art.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in developing and chemical probes for functional assaying of microbiome and human tissues.

  • Experience in the design and conduct of human studies is a positive.

  • Experience grant writing, and program development and management.
