As an Internal Communications Professional, you will create and implement an integrated strategy to communicate with PNNL staff. You will build and implement a proactive outreach plan to engage internal stakeholders based on PNNL’s strategic priorities and editorial calendar. Based on the internal communications plan you deliver, you will modernize channels of communication, optimize the content submission pipeline, and design campaigns across multiple platforms that deliver on PNNL’s staff experience and culture expectations. You will oversee day-to-day internal communications tactics and provide thought leadership in elevating these tactics to help achieve organizational goals.
In this exciting position, you will continually seek to improve and innovate, providing resourcefulness and professionalism to enhance the quality and impact of the Laboratory’s internal communications program.
As PNNL’s leader of staff-focused communications, you will collaborate extensively with Human Resources Division leaders, and other key employee-facing functions, to create an engaging and holistic staff experience. As a key member of the Communications team, you will provide counsel to senior Communications Division leaders and colleagues to suggest impactful internal communications approaches, technologies, and outcome measures.
You will have the opportunity to manage budgets associated with communications deliverables, campaigns, and resources. To measure effectiveness, you will identify key performance indicators, call-to-action statements, and suggest tracking mechanisms to integrate into communications efforts. You will provide feedback on campaign success and suggest improvements to communications efforts based on measurable metrics and data.
Authority and Accountability
-With the Communications Division Senior Leadership Team and other key PNNL stakeholders, build an effective internal communications strategy; create a proactive, integrated schedule of internal outreach campaigns, channels, and techniques.
-Build a schedule, based on the internal communications strategy and the Communications Division editorial calendar, to refresh internal website content across multiple channels; prioritize and update posting of staff-submitted content to appropriate internal web platforms.
-Oversee an initiative to improve the functionality and content strategy for PNNL’s internal digital signage network; prioritize, verify quality, and upload contributed content.
-Collaborate with senior Communications Division partners to deliver the Laboratory Director’s messages and other executive communications to staff through appropriate channels, focusing on timeliness, efficiency, and high quality.
-Triage proposed all-staff messages and distribute them through appropriate channels based on PNNL posting policies.
-Provide strategic and tactical counsel and guidance for individual colleagues or teams who seek to publicize information to PNNL staff.
-Ensure that state-of-the-art capability exists to measure engagement with, and impact of, internal communications efforts; conduct regular measurement of communications tool effectiveness and site usage leveraging contemporary best practices.
-Prepare regular reports on the effectiveness of internal communications campaigns and techniques to Communications Division Senior Leadership Team and collaborating partners.
-Conduct continual improvement exercises, including after completion of each internal communications campaign.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
-Demonstrated ability to influence senior leadership to gain both collaborative and financial support for the implementation of a contemporary internal communications strategy that follows industry best practices and that is conducive to the necessary platforms.
-Demonstrated ability to create and implement holistic, strategic communication plans for use in internal communications in a large, complex organization.
-Vision to develop and drive a communications framework that engages and inspires staff around PNNL’s mission, leadership principles, activities, and milestones.
-Ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams including writers, editors, designers, photographers, programmers, developers, internal clients, and project managers.
-Demonstrated ability to create new, and improve existing, communication channels for driving the messaging framework, effectively reaching staff with information that they need and that will resonate with them.
-Demonstrated expertise in applying measurements for all activities and materials related to internal communications.

-A deep understanding and ability to take advantage of industry trends as applied to modern internal communications approaches.
-Experience in management and operations of an organizational intranet as well as the use of integrated internal communications tools and channels to achieve strategic goals.

-Ability to establish and maintain institution-wide workflows and processes.
-Demonstrated track record of working effectively with diverse individuals and groups.

- Bachelor's degree plus seven (7) years of related experience; or advanced degree plus four (4) years of proven success leading a strategic, internal communications function for a large, complex organization, especially one focused on science, health, and/or technology.
-Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or a science relevant to PNNL’s research.
-A demonstrated portfolio of specific projects and expertise in the application of state-of-the-art technologies relevant to the internal communications function.
-A robust portfolio of internal communications campaigns and project successes that demonstrates this capability.
-Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
-Experience and proficiency writing and editing promotional content and summaries of scientific research, as well as related content for the web and social media channels.
-Experience within a national laboratory or other science-based organization.
-Ability to mentor fellow employees in modern communications strategy, techniques, and metrics.
-Demonstrated success consulting and working effectively with senior leadership within a large organization.
-Familiarity with project management principles and software.
-Knowledge of typography and design aesthetics.
-Active membership in professional and communications societies and forums.
