The Opportunity

As a key member of the PNNL Communications team, you will provide strategic communications counsel to Human Resources Leadership; create impactful internal and external communications strategies and tactics that connect HR programs to business goals, as well as to employees, candidates and retirees; inspire employees to visibly embrace and promote PNNL culture and behaviors; identify unique approaches to create an employee advocacy program, motivating staff to promote the PNNL experience through their social media networks; showcase the PNNL brand promise to potential candidates

Using strategic thinking, planning, and project management skills, you will conceptualize and execute highly impactful internal and external communications campaigns to help attract and retain high-performing employees, and to keep retirees informed of updates related to their ongoing benefits.

The Ideal Candidate

If you are known for excellent customer service and have extensive experience building and implementing communications strategies– particularly related to human resource functions – we want to connect with you! The ideal candidate will be able to:

  • Provide strategic and tactical counsel and guidance for HR leaders who seek to publicize information to PNNL staff, retirees and potential candidates, ensuring clear and consistent messaging

  • Collaborate with both Communications colleagues and senior Human Resources leaders to deliver relevant information to all audiences through appropriate channels, focusing on timeliness, efficiency, and high quality

  • Build trust and meaningful relationships between Human Resources, leadership and staff

  • Play a significant role in rebranding and rebuilding the HR intranet experience, focusing on ease of use, self-service, visual content, engaging news and timely event calendar

  • Establish key performance indicators to measure the effectiveness of HR communications

  • Demonstrated ability to create and implement strategic communication plans for a human resources organization

  • Vision to develop and drive a communications framework that engages and inspires staff around PNNL’s mission, leadership principles, culture, activities, and milestones

  • Ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams including HR leaders, HR generalists, writers, designers, photographers, internal clients, and project managers

  • Experience in management and operation of an organizational intranet

  • Demonstrated ability to improve existing communication channels, that inform and resonate with all audiences

  • A deep understanding of industry trends as applied to modern communications approaches

  • Track record of focus and working well under pressure, during tight deadlines, with humor, tact, empathy and professionalism

  • Exhibit excellence in all areas of customer service

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with seven (7) years of related experience; or advanced degree plus four (4) years of experience. Proven success contributing to a strategic communications function for a large, complex organization required

  • A demonstrated portfolio of specific projects and expertise in application of current technologies relevant to the communications function

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus 11 years of experience or advanced degree plus 8 years of experience

  • Experience creating a corporate LinkedIn presence that reflects company culture and values

  • Prefer degree in English, journalism, communications, or a science relevant to PNNL’s research

  • Experience creating an employee advocacy program with platforms such as LinkedIn Elevate, Facebook, Instagram, to externally promote company brand promise through employees’ personal networks

  • Experience creating a strategy to manage Glass Door account for a large company, focusing on building a genuine, favorable presence on the platform

  • Familiarity with building an internal social media platform (such as Yammer or Facebook Workplace) that engages both staff and leaders to share information, crowdsource ideas, and build a sense of community

  • Experience and proficiency writing and editing promotional content and summaries about human resources programs, as well as related content for the web and social media channels

  • Experience within a national laboratory or other science-based organization

  • Ability to mentor fellow employees in modern communications strategy, techniques, and metrics

  • Demonstrated success consulting and working effectively with senior leadership within a large organization
