This position provides for the development and implementation of 1) Laboratory-wide programs for fire protection; 2) deployment within the Laboratory of fire protection and life safety code requirements; 3) maintenance of technical bases for facility operating boundaries for chemicals; 4) fire protection support for research activities and projects; and 5) fire and explosion hazards analysis, risk assessment, and mitigation.

The job scope includes evaluation and interpretation of regulations to ensure the technical aspects/content the PNNL fire protection program meets the intent of local, state, and federal requirements and provides senior-level fire protection support to research and facility staff on fire safety issues associated with projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering and 10+ years of relevant Fire Protection Engineering, or advanced degree and 8+ years of relevant Fire Protection Engineering experience.

  • Due to the requirement of accessing sensitive areas, this position requires U.S. citizenship.

  • Ability to evaluate complex technical problems and provide solutions.

  • Progressively responsible fire protection engineering experience with a proven ability to work with fire safety and regulatory issues.

  • Experience in:

  • interpretation and application of local, state, and federal requirements and regulations associated with fire protection and life safety code;

  • performance of fire hazard and/or risk analysis; and

  • performance of building fire assessments;

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Science/Engineering fire protection engineering.

  • Professional license and/or certification.

  • Commercial and/or DOE nuclear facility fire protection engineering experience.

  • Experience in:

  • performance of technical design reviews to support design, modification, and construction activities;

  • design of fire alarm and fire suppression systems;

  • testing and maintenance of fire alarm/suppression systems and knowledge of manual firefighting activities;

  • development of management system programs to implement hazard and risk control methodologies associated with fire protection.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with external regulatory authorities.
