The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) seeks a data scientist focused on data integration for predictive understanding of complex biological and environmental systems. The EMSL is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science user facility that provides innovative and breakthrough experimental and computational science that addresses DOE Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) programs by providing access to more than 75 state-of-the-art instrumental and high-performance computing capabilities. EMSL users address some of the most important molecular-to-mesoscale challenges relevant to DOE missions.
The candidate should have experience in scientific software development, high-throughput omics data integration, and managing scientific data in accordance with the FAIR principles. The position requires an ability and willingness to work with EMSL users to assist them in achieving their scientific objectives. The candidate must therefore be adept at assembling, motivating, and managing interdisciplinary technical teams through strong leadership, interpersonal, and project management skills and experience, in addition to be willing to mentor, advice, and assist researchers with a variety of research interests. The candidate will also help lead peer-reviewed research in areas of research important to EMSL and PNNL and contribute to ongoing research efforts. Senior candidates will quickly establish themselves as independent principal investigators (PIs) through competitive proposals, and serve as an active resource for others, and mentoring early career staff in proposal and scientific career development.
Build a research program in data science applied to the biological or environmental sciences, developing data analysis and integration approaches for omics or imaging data.
Collaborate with researchers on the development and innovative application of advanced simulation, data analysis, visual analytics, or other computational techniques to research problems relevant to DOE-BER missions where computational approaches are significant.
Responsible for managing user support for EMSL’s high-performance computing capabilities. Attract and interact with potential and existing EMSL users with a focus on high scientific impact to encourage submission of competitive user proposals and provide technical feedback specific to EMSL’s computational capability.
Allocate resources and personnel to user proposals within the project budget guidelines set by EMSL management in order to execute the proposal. Manage resources to execute the user projects within allocated budget. Maintain open and transparent dialog with the users and oversee activities to ensure the proper execution of the science in a timely manner.
Contribute to EMSL’s culture of active learning to improve user project execution, facility reports, strategy documents, and EMSL user facility triennial reviews.
Discipline, principal job duties/expectations, and qualitative and quantitative measures of performance that exceed the Functional Descriptor:

Takes lead in scope, schedule, and budget for projects or large tasks.
Mentors staff and peers across directorate and leads through operational assignments that benefit the group and directorate.
Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security. May contribute to directorate level operational improvement activities.
BS/BA with 7+ years of experience; or MS/MA/MEng with 5+ years of experience, or PhD with 3+ years of experience
Meaningful experience with development projects, cross-team collaboration, and project budgeting.
Research experience in theory or methods in areas such as bioinformatics, data science, computer science, or computational chemistry.
PhD with 3+ years of experience
Demonstrated experience in evaluation/application of new algorithms and implementations for the biological or environmental sciences.
Demonstrated experience in data management and scientific application processing, including data warehousing, workflow development, and automation.
Experience leading and participating in domain-science software development teams.
