The High-Performance Computing (HPC) Group at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a scientist to drive research and development of PNNL's fundamental Computer Science capability. PNNL is leading innovative research in emerging computing systems, high-performance computing, and hardware/software codesign and is seeking a scientist with a deep technical background in these areas. Candidates should have proven leadership in guiding research teams, defining research priorities, engagement with sponsoring agencies, and successful funding of projects and programs. The successful candidate should have scientific recognition at the national level and the ability to manage complex technical and strategic goals to contribute to the development and growth of a research organization that will have prominent visibility both inside and outside the laboratory. Candidates should also bring a passion for building multi-disciplinary teams and lead fundamental, high-visibility research with deep impact on national computing strategy.
Major areas of responsibility include:
Developing and leading research teams in all fundamental areas of computing, including system software and hardware/software codesign
Leading successful proposals, peer-reviewed papers, technical presentations, and other technical artifacts for internal and external use
Contributing to drive computing and computer science strategic direction at the laboratory level
Representing PNNL's computer science capabilities to external parties, such as sponsoring agencies and the broader research community
Cultivating internal and external multidisciplinary partnership
This position provides outstanding opportunities to:
Lead teams of researchers in fundamental computer science research in areas of high-performance computing, emerging systems, system software, and hardware/software codesign.
Drive business development activities, including the preparation of project and program proposals targeting funding sources within the US Government interested in advancing computer science and high-performance computing research.
Define research priorities in the area of computer science.
Train and mentor mid-level to senior-level researchers.
Level 4 : Expert in at least one S&E domain and the ability to connect multiple domains. Sought after within PNNL for technical leadership to set technical direction. Holds leadership role in professional community. Organizes and chairs sessions at national meetings of professional societies. Lead author or developer on a significant number of technical products. Recognized by sponsors and collaborators for delivery on important programmatic elements. Using established cross organizational network, external peers, and clients to further outcomes. Leading organizational teams that proactively identify and promote new capabilities within a division and S&E domain, and advance the directorate strategy. Mentoring staff and peers across directorate. Leading through operational assignments that benefit the group and directorate.
Level 5 : Established nationally as an expert in at least one S&E domain. Establishing new approaches at a national level and advancing state of the art concepts. Sought out to participate in peer reviews, and book chapters establishing the foundational aspect of the discipline. Sought out as an invited speaker at national forums. Displays a significant record of technical products influencing their discipline. Recognized by Lab leadership, sponsors and collaborators as a resource for resolving challenges with impact at a significant programmatic or Lab mission level. Established network across PNNL, other national laboratories, academia, industry, and professional societies. Collaborating with other Labs, academia, industry and leads multi-Lab projects Leader in the development and execution of directorate strategies. Sought out to lead laboratory teams that influence operations and strategies. Mentoring mid to senior staff across PNNL and collaborators.
BS/BA with 7 years of experience, MS/MA with 5 years of experience, or PhD with 3 years of experience
BS/BA with 9 years of experience MS/MA with 7 years of experience PhD with 5 years of experience
A Ph.D. in computer science or related field is desired.
Recognized research leadership in fundamental computer science, validated through a record of scholarly accomplishment, honors and professional service to the scientific community, and a national reputation will be prioritized.
A proven record of accomplishment in developing and leading teams with a diverse set of backgrounds working on focused problems, along with a consistent record of attracting funding for and leading groundbreaking scientific research are desired. In addition:
Knowledge of government programs, particularly within the DOE, in advanced computing.
National Lab experience is desirable.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
