Today, that company sells the largest capacity flow battery in the U.S. and Europe.

We’re looking for a Senior Commercialization Manager to join our Technology Deployment and Outreach (TDO) team. This position can be based in Richland, WA or Seattle, WA campus locations. In this role, you will identify and work closely with companies in the energy storage market sector to inform your strategies leading to IP that addresses key needs of the energy storage market. You will also work with your colleague Commercialization Managers as well as scientists and engineers in PNNL’s Energy and Environment Directorate (EED) to develop licensing pathways into the energy storage market for their portfolio IP. Many of these researchers are internationally recognized for developing technology in the Energy Storage market. In partnership with your TDO colleagues, PNNL researchers and EED’s senior leaders, you will have responsibility for proposing and overseeing the investments we make to protect and grow this complex portfolio of intellectual property. And your exceptional skill in negotiating and closing license agreements with partner companies will ensure our research has a significant impact on people’s lives everywhere in the U.S. The successful candidate will establish close relationships with energy storage leaders and their companies, connecting those leaders with PNNL researchers and management within assigned portfolio organizations to guide the development of technologies having commercial value to energy storage products. This position contributes directly to PNNL’s financial performance through the identification and valuation of Lab intellectual property and successful negotiation of licensing intellectual property. We are seeking demonstrated experience working in or with private sector product development/marketing functions for the energy storage marketplace.

Responsibilities:

  • Using own technical and business expertise, this position is responsible for creating licensing opportunities in the Energy Storage Key Market in a way that contributes substantially to TDO/department performance as gauged by Success Metrics included in TDO’s annual operating plan.

  • A primary deliverable for this position is an Energy Storage Market Strategy that defines the scope of this market, key companies and their needs, assessment of PNNL’s technologies to address those needs, and an action plan to complete license negotiations. This strategy guides TDO’s commercialization activities in the Energy Storage market.

  • Establishes strong working partnerships with other TDO commercialization managers and PNNL researchers to inform them to high-priority energy storage industry needs and to encourage development of new technologies and maturation of existing technologies.

  • This position will also provide TDO’s primary interaction and liaison with PNNL’s growing energy sciences capability, research and facilities to ensure commercialization opportunities are developed in tandem with expansion of PNNL’s research and testing capabilities.

  • Provides leadership to TDO programs in areas such as entrepreneurship, technology development, or Lab-system engagement.

  • This position contributes directly to PNNL’s financial performance through the identification and valuation of PNNL’s IP and successful negotiation of licensing that IP.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree plus 10 years experience, or advanced degree plus 8 years experience.

  • Experience should be in a technical/scientific organization or technology-based business.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 years demonstrated experience working in or with private sector product development/marketing functions for energy storage products.

  • Scientific/technical background in chemistry, materials science or energy systems integration.

  • Direct work experience in a research organization.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and commercializing intellectual property based on energy-related technologies.

  • Demonstrated skill in negotiating agreements and program sales.

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire.
