Job Description

The Building Energy Research and Analysis Group within the Electricity Infrastructure & Buildings Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is currently seeking a Senior Building Energy Research Engineer. This position will assume a leading role in supporting the development, adoption, and compliance with residential and non-residential building energy codes. The successful candidate will be a proactive, highly motivated self-starter with expertise in building energy systems and the ability to develop and lead complex research projects.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

This position will include leading project teams in a variety of tasks involved in supporting PNNL’s building energy codes program. This includes use of building simulation tools for codes and standards development as well as other high performance building energy analyses. Use of EnergyPlus and OpenStudio simulation software and other analytical tools will be an expectation of this position. Additionally, this position may involve large scale building energy simulation analysis using data-oriented programming/scripting languages such as Ruby, R, Perl, and Python on Linux-based computer clusters. The project may involve research on energy efficiency, sustainable design practices, and carbon management strategies.

  • Serve as a technical lead, project manager, PI, or Co-PI on multiple significant projects or tasks.

  • Shares results of research with project team members and to clients and diverse groups of stakeholders through public presentations.

  • Takes lead in scope, schedule, and budget for projects or large tasks

  • Prepares technical reports and peer reviewed papers

  • Develops and realizes new significant project opportunities, and leads the development of technical sections of large proposals.

  • Serves as a technical resource and mentor to staff across the division.

  • Participates in professional activities and establishing external collaborations.

This position can be based in either Richland, WA, or Portland, OR.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Sciences or related field with 7+ years’ experience, or Master’s degree with 5+ years’ experience, or Ph.D. with 3+ years’ relevant experience.

  • Excellent English writing, presentation skills, and interpersonal skills.

  • Expertise in a variety of building energy systems and analytical tools and in energy efficiency strategies for building HVAC, lighting, and envelope systems, include design or complex analyses.

  • Experience using building energy modeling software such as DOE2 or EnergyPlus

  • Experience providing technical presentations to knowledgeable audiences

  • Ability to lead teams of technical researchers and manage projects to meet budgets and deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Use of building simulation and other analytical tools to model building energy systems for high-efficiency residential and commercial buildings and for innovative technologies is highly desirable.

  • Experience developing and managing research projects including proposal writing, securing project funding, working with or leading technical teams..

  • Experience applying engineering economics and cost estimating to demonstrate cost effectiveness of energy efficiency strategies

  • Experience developing technical requirements for building energy codes or standards

  • Experience with EnergyPlus simulation software

  • Experience applying statistical methods to research results

  • Experience with data-oriented programming/scripting languages and other computer software

  • Experience designing and setting up building energy monitoring systems or laboratory and field experiments with data acquisition and processing

  • Building Energy Modeling Professional Certification

  • Building commissioning and energy auditing experience

  • Experience using energy simulation for code compliance or beyond code incentive programs such as LEED or utility programs.

  • Experience in software development

  • Must be willing to travel 10% of the time.
