Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Buildings & Connected Systems Group is seeking a mid- or senior- level Building Energy Research Engineer to help lead strategic, high visibility projects in support of the PNNL’s building energy codes program. The successful candidate will lead projects and teams driving the development, adoption, and compliance with residential and non-residential building energy codes, and shepherding the transition of energy codes from prescriptive to a performance basis. The successful candidate will also lead research on grid-interactive efficient buildings, sustainable design practices, and carbon management strategies to support policy development and building-to-grid scenario planning. Much of this research will involve use of building simulation and other analytical tools to model building energy systems for high-efficiency residential and commercial buildings and for innovative technologies.

The successful candidate will be accountable to:

  • Project and/or Task Managers for performing assigned roles, following applicable project and field procedures, and performance of assigned tasks on time and within budget;

  • The Buildings & Connected Systems Group Leader, and Building Energy Simulation Team Leader, for staff development and performance reviews, and general operational discipline (e.g., maintaining training qualifications, procedural compliance, safe operations).

The position may be mid-level (3) or senior-level (4) based on the successful candidate’s education, demonstrated experience and skill readiness to meet theses performance level requirements:

Building Energy Research Engineer Level 3: Building specialization in at least one science or engineering domain. Selects and develops technical approaches to complex problems with occasional oversight. Principal investigator or co-PI on projects or tasks, integrating work of team members. Generates new ideas for and contributes technical content for small to medium proposals. Supports scoping, scheduling, and budgeting for major tasks. Demonstrates ability to acquire funding for self and task level teams. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security. Mentors junior staff. Establishing role in professional communities. Leads development of technical products.

Senior Building Energy Research Engieer Level 4: Recognized expert in at least one science or engineering domain and able to connect multiple domains. Selects and develops technical approaches to complex challenges. Principal investigator or co-PI on multiple or significantly complex projects or tasks and/or involving multiple tasks, capabilities. Develops, and realizes new significant project opportunities, leading the development of technical sections of large proposals. Takes lead in scope, schedule, and budget for major projects\tasks. Demonstrates ability to acquire funding for self and task level teams. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security. Mentors staff and peers across disciplines. Lead author or developer on a significant number of technical products. Holds leadership roles in professional societies. Recognized by sponsors and collaborators for delivery on important programmatic elements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors with 5 years of experience, Masters with 3 years of experience, PhD with 1 year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are preferred; however, candidates who meet many but not all qualifications are still encouraged to apply.

  • Bachelors with 7 years of experience, Masters with 5 years of experience, PhD with 3 years of experience

  • Graduate degree in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Sciences, or related field

  • Advanced experience with building energy simulation and software such as EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, and eQuest; ASHRAE Building Energy Modeling Professional Certification desirable

  • Strong foundational knowledge of building physics, various building energy systems and efficiency strategies for HVAC, lighting, and envelope systems

  • Familiarity with programming/scripting languages such in Python, Ruby, C++, R, or Perl

  • Experience in software development and management of collaborative software projects

  • Experience developing energy policy for nations, states, public agencies, or other organizations

  • Experience using simulation to develop technical requirements for building energy codes or standards, or beyond code incentives programs (e.g. LEED, utility programs)

  • Experience in the use or development of building performance rating methods such as ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G Performance Rating Method and RESNETs Home Energy Rating System

  • Experience quantifying the economic and societal costs and benefits of building energy efficiency strategies

  • Building energy auditing and/or commissioning experience

  • Experience designing and setting up building energy monitoring systems or laboratory and field experiments with data acquisition and processing

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; skilled delivering presentations to technical audiences
