Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a research scientist to advance our wind energy research portfolio through a combination of scientific activities and program development. The successful candidate will join a growing team of PNNL scientists and contribute to existing projects targeted at improving resource characterization (both terrestrial and offshore) and improving estimates of turbulence inflow in the context of a coupled measurements and modeling approach. In addition, the candidate will work with existing PNNL leadership to continue to develop PNNL’s wind energy research portfolio.

The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:

Level 4 : Leads multiple or significantly complex, and/or high risk projects or tasks and/or involving multiple tasks, capabilities, and organizations. Develops, and realizes new significant project opportunities, leading the development of technical sections of large proposals. Takes lead in scope, schedule, and budget for projects or large tasks. Demonstrates ability to acquire funding for self and task level teams.

Level 5 : Conceives, plans, and executes R&D with considerable influence on scientific and technological developments. Displays considerable leadership in defining scientific and technical objectives across programs. Leads in the capture, planning, and technical execution of complex interdisciplinary projects and programs across organizational boundaries with lab level impact, and outside of the laboratory. Captures and enables sufficient funding to support self and project teams.

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA with 7 years of experience, MS/MA with 5 years of experience, or PhD with 3 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 9 years of experience, MS/MA with 7 years of experience, or PhD with 5 years of experience

  • Preferred degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, or related field with relevant work experience

  • Expertise in atmospheric sciences and analysis of boundary-layer turbulence

  • Experience with WRF and/or other modeling systems and high-performance computing.

  • Experience in analysis of boundary layer observations or simulations for wind energy applications.

  • Successful history of leading research teams and leading development of funded proposals

  • Demonstrated ability to lead publications to completion in refereed journals

  • History of direct engagement of the wind industry in research activities
