Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a research scientist to develop and evaluate new treatments of modeling of crop yields and management practices, biogeochemistry (BGC), and ecosystem impacts and land use/land cover change (LULCC) in the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Land Model (ELM). The position will also include work focused on developing LULCC scenarios with a focus on the coastal zone to support simulations with the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM). The incumbent will work on one or more of the following areas:

  • Developing and integrating improved representations used in Land Models,

  • Evaluating ELM at various spatial and temporal scales using a wide range of observational datasets,

  • Developing new LULCC scenarios

The incumbent will work in close collaboration with scientists at PNNL, other national labs, and universities.

Minimum Qualifications

BS with 2+ years’ experience, MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience, or PhD with 0 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in earth, atmospheric, environmental, geological, hydrological sciences or other related field with 2+ years’ experience,

  • Demonstrated experience analyzing large observational and model datasets,

  • Fluency in model programming language (e.g., Fortran, C++),

  • Fluency in data visualization and analytics tools (e.g., Python/shell scripting),

  • Experience with high-performance computing environments,

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills,

  • Ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals,

  • Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and using land models (e.g., ELM, CLM) and their associated Earth system models (e.g., E3SM, CESM), and integrated assessment models (e.g., GCAM),

  • Knowledge of physical processes affecting LULCC, BGC, and ecosystem impacts in the Earth system,

  • Knowledge of novel data-model integration techniques, including, but not limited to, advanced statistical analysis and/or machine learning techniques.
