Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Research Scientist - Land-Atmosphere-Cloud Interactions in RICHLAND, Washington

Organization and Job ID

Job ID: 310091

Directorate: Earth & Biological Sciences

Division: Atmospheric Sciences & Global Change

Group: Earth System Analysis & Modeling

Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a research scientist that will discover new scientific insights into processes coupling the land surface and the atmosphere as well as how those processes influence the boundary layer and lifecycle of convective clouds. The ability to analyze large observational (long-term monitoring or short-term field campaign) and model (LES, regional-scale, global climate) datasets and to pose hypotheses that tease out new insights is critical. The candidate is expected to approach the problem using measurements, modeling, or a combination of both. Knowledge of the relationships used by land-surface and boundary-layer parameterizations in regional or climate models and the ability to modify parameterizations is desirable. The candidate will work with a team of scientists at PNNL, other national labs as well as universities on topics of common interest.

When applying please include the following in a single document:

  • Cover letter describing your research experience and interests;

  • Curriculum vitae with list of publications in refereed journals;

  • Names and addresses of three references.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS with 2+ years’ experience, or advanced degree;

  • Experience running and revising codes of regional or atmospheric general circulations models (e.g., EAM, CAM, WRF);

  • Demonstrated experience in land-atmosphere-cloud interactions research;

  • Fluency in Fortran and Python/shell scripting; demonstrated ability to write clean and flexible codes and scripts;

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;

  • Ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals;

  • Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD with relevant work experience. Preference will be given to those with atmospheric science background;

  • Demonstrated experience in analyzing large observational and model datasets;

  • Knowledge of measurement uncertainties and different types of model errors;

  • Experience with high-performance computing environments.
