Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a research scientist to develop and apply new computational methods to improve the numerical accuracy and computational efficiency of numerical models used in weather and climate prediction. Initial assignments of the successful candidate will focus on reducing time integration errors in atmospheric physics parameterizations and process coupling in the atmosphere component of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). Part of the effort will be spent on developing computationally efficient experimentation strategies for model evaluation. The candidate will work with a team of scientists at PNNL, other national labs as well as universities on topics of common interest for atmospheric modelers, applied mathematicians, and computational scientists.

When applying please include the following in a single document:

  • Cover letter describing your research experience and interests;

  • Curriculum vitae with list of publications in refereed journals;

  • Names and addresses of three references.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS with 2+ years’ experience, or advanced degree;

  • Past experience in running and revising codes of atmospheric general circulations models (e.g., EAM, CAM, WRF) is required;

  • Demonstrated experience with numerical methods for atmosphere modeling;

  • Fluency in Fortran and Python/shell scripting; demonstrated ability to write clean and flexible codes and scripts;

  • Experience with high-performance computing environments;

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;
