Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a research scientist to contribute to the development and evaluation of new computational methods that aim at improving the accuracy and computational efficiency of numerical models used in weather and climate prediction. Initial assignments of the successful candidate will focus on assessing and reducing numerical errors in the atmospheric component of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). The candidate will work with a team of scientists at PNNL, other national labs as well as universities on topics of common interest for atmospheric modelers, applied mathematicians, and computational scientists.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 2 years of experience, or MS/MA with 0 years of experience, or PhD with 0 years of experience.

  • Fluency in Fortran and Python/shell scripting;

  • Experience with high-performance computing environments;

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;

  • Ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals;

  • Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD with 2+ years experience. Preference will be given to those with both atmospheric science background and applied mathematics training.

  • Demonstrated experience in weather or climate related research;

  • Past experience in running and revising codes of atmospheric models (e.g., EAM, CAM, WRF);

  • Knowledge on numerical methods for atmosphere modeling.
