Job Description

The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks an early career scientist interested in developing new scientific insights into complex terrain and marine atmospheric boundary layers for applications to wind energy. You will be expected to work as part of a team of scientists investigating boundary layer structure and dynamics that drive wind and turbulence fields encountered by wind turbines. Specifically, you will be expected to use WRF, WRF/LES, and/or other microscale solvers to address critical science questions related to turbulent inflow to wind plants in both onshore and offshore applications. A successful candidate will also integrate their model results with state-of-the-art observations of boundary-layer properties, including lidar and other technologies collected as part of DOE field studies. In collaboration with others on the team, you may also contribute to the development of new theoretical concepts and parameterizations for the boundary layer, including the impacts of clouds and atmosphere-surface interactions.

When applying please include the following in a single document:

  • Cover letter describing your research experience and interests;

  • Curriculum vitae with list of publications in refereed journals;

  • Names and addresses of three references.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS plus 2+ years’ experience, or advanced degree;

  • Experience in running WRF, WRF-LES or other LES;

  • Fluency in Fortran and Python/shell scripting; demonstrated ability to write clean and flexible codes and scripts;

  • Experience with high-performance computing environments;

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;

  • Ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals;

  • Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in atmospheric science, meteorology, or related field with relevant work experience;

  • Demonstrated experience with numerical methods for atmosphere modeling;

  • Experience working with unstructured grids and coupling across scales.
