Job Description

The PNNL PubCenter is seeking an entrepreneurial candidate who would thrive on developing themselves into a liaison-like role between the PNNL Publishing Lifecycle and scientists and engineers in computational sciences. The candidate will also be responsible for creating a data literacy component within the PubCenter that integrates and aligns with the FAIR Data Principles. The successful candidate is expected to develop and lead sustainable PubCenter services for PNNL’s computer science research community, provide 1:1 consultation to researchers, and be an advocate for the role data has in PNNL’s Publishing Lifecycle.

The library is a part of PNNL’s PubCenter, which provides service-focused support to PNNL researchers through the full publishing lifecycle. A team of seven librarians and two support staff coordinate services and maintain an entirely electronic collection of journals, books, and databases, with subscription focuses tied to PNNL research areas and funding priorities set by governmental agencies. Services are divided into four broad stages of the publication lifecycle: Research, including literature searching, interlibrary loan, business intelligence research, journal and conference venue targeting, and library resource education; Write, in collaboration with PNNL Communications staff; Review, including an internal staff and peer review process, education on peer review in science, and ethics in publishing (e.g. copyright, plagiarism, “salami slicing” research); and Share, including news and social media promotion, author reputation management, and bibliometric evaluation.

The Research Librarian:

  • Conducts searches of literature; analyzes, synthesizes, and evaluates data; extracts pertinent information; and prepares results/products of material searched via analytical summaries, bibliographic libraries, and bibliometric reports.

  • Demonstrates expert knowledge of content and structure of information resources. Mines text, applies metadata, indexes content, and prepares visualizations of data.

  • Manages electronic resources through integrated library systems; enhances access to resources through deployment of websites, link resolvers, federated and meta search tools; applies advanced information delivery tools.

  • Implements and trains customers in use of continuously evolving technologies that deliver information to research customers.

  • Maintains and improves information retrieval, analyst, and content and data management capabilities. Keeps abreast of developments in areas of interest to the company and regularly consults with researchers and other information users to ensure maximum usefulness and service.

  • Creates and maintains a data literacy component within the PubCenter at PNNL, integrating and aligning to the FAIR Data Principles.

  • Leads strategic direction for the role of research data management, research tools and workflows, data sharing, and open science in the PubCenter’s stewardship of the Publishing Lifecycle.

  • Contributes as a member of PNNL’s Scientific Data Management Strategy team and partners with scientists and their development of data management plans. Acquires and maintains expertise in information trends within research data management, digital curation, data science, and related areas.

  • Provides technical library code and development support using vendor APIs to deliver subscribed content to researchers and assisting the Electronic Resources Librarian with code development in the Ex Libris Primo environment.

  • Presents significant contributions at regional and national conferences and in peer-reviewed journal venues.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited program in Library and Information Science or Information Management AND three years of experience in science, engineering, or medical subject liaison or research data services librarian in an academic, research, or health sciences library.
