Research Computing advances scientific discovery by providing researchers computational tools to accelerate their research outcomes. We support computationally enabled science by providing researchers access to computational building blocks (e.g., HPC, Machine Learning environments, Data Management Tools etc.). We also provide services, expertise and support to researchers to optimize their use of our capabilities (e.g., HPC Consulting, Computing Infrastructure, Operations and Cloud Deployment Support, etc.), all while fostering a culture of computing through interdisciplinary collaboration and access to computational resources.
We are seeking a proven IT Engineer with Linux experience to join the existing team in providing IT Engineering and operational expertise in support of a diverse range of research projects. In this role, you will be responsible for implementing well engineered and supportable custom solutions while meeting Lab cyber and operational policies. These solutions will include hardware, peripherals, services, directories, security and storage aspects. In addition, you will be part of the team that maintains and operates a wide infrastructure base which supports many projects and missions of the various Laboratory sponsors. As needs and architectures evolve, some of these solutions will need to be migrated to public cloud providers. Therefore, your experience in supporting these platforms will be essential as you are involved in cloud migrations.
Additional responsibilities include:
Implementing and operating configuration management processes and tools
Writing, Maintaining, improving Ansible playbooks for configuration management on heterogeneous systems.
The hiring level will be determined based on the education, experience and skill set of the successful candidate based on the following:
Applies engineering principles and theories in developing technical approaches to solve challenges. Receives guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives. Works independently on standard tasks. Defines and leads project work at a small task/project level, reporting results on time and on budget. Effectively teams and shares resources to optimize solutions. Mentors junior staff and students.
Selects and develops technical approaches on assignments with occasional oversight on complex problems. Principal investigator or co-PI on projects or tasks, while integrating capabilities of work team members. Supports scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or major task level. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security. Makes key contributions in setting technical direction. Builds effective project teams with membership across a group, S&E domain and/or directorate. Contributes to the local organization through mentorship of junior staff and taking on operational assignments.
- BS/BA in a relevant field with 2 years of experience, MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience, PhD with 0 years of experience. A high school diploma or GED plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of the required degree.
BS/BA in a relevant field with 5 years of experience, MS/MA with 3 years of experience, PhD with 1 year of experience. A high school diploma or GED plus a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of the required degree.
Experience system administration on various Linux OS’s (RHEL/Ubuntu).
Experience with Linux system monitoring and task management.
Experience with Ansible IT Automation tool
Experience with authentication schemes that support Linux, such as Kerberos, and LDAP.
Demonstrated Python/Shell experience deploying Infrastructure services as code (IaC)
Experience delivering projects via Agile methodologies

In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
