Job Description

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a world-class research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to collaboration and work–life balance. The High Performance Computing (HPC) Group seeks an early- to mid- career staff scientist to conduct research and development of PNNL’s Quantum Information Sciences (QIS) capability. PNNL is driving cutting edge research in QIS systems and applications in a number of domains, including Quantum Chemistry, Quantum Computing, and Quantum Machine Learning. We are seeking a scientist with a passion for the mathematics, theory, and algorithms that will shape the future of QIS across the DOE National Laboratory complex and with the ability to drive PNNL’s efforts in this area. Candidates should have technical experience and a strong publication record in QIS research, work well in a team environment, and have an interest in pursuing multi-disciplinary problems. The successful candidate will work with scientists across PNNL in a wide range of scientific areas with the opportunity to form multi-disciplinary collaborations and conduct fundamental, high-visibility research that will have a deep impact on PNNL’s QIS capability.

Major areas of responsibility include:

  • To conduct research as part of a team in one or more of the following: design and development of algorithms and software for Quantum Information Systems; advancement of theories of Quantum Information Science; mathematical foundations of Quantum Information Science

  • To contribute to and potentially lead successful proposals, peer-reviewed papers, technical presentations, and other technical artifacts for internal and external use

  • To represent PNNL’s Quantum Information Science capabilities to external partners, such as sponsoring agencies and the broader research community

  • To collaborate with researchers both within and outside the laboratory in multi-disciplinary research teams

  • This position provides outstanding opportunities to:

  • Collaborate with researchers in applied theoretical and computational research efforts in Quantum Information Science, particularly in quantum computing, quantum networking, and quantum-enhanced sensing

  • Participate and potentially drive business development activities, including contributing to proposals targeting funding sources and agencies interested in Quantum Information Systems

  • Help shape PNNL’s research priorities in the area of Quantum Information Sciences

  • Train and mentor junior and mid-level researchers

Level 3 : Selects and develops technical approaches on assignments with occasional oversight on complex problems. Principal investigator or co-PI on projects or tasks, while integrating capabilities of work team members. Supports scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or major task level. Generates new ideas for proposals and business development opportunities while leading development of technical section of small to medium proposals. Demonstrates ability to acquire funding for self with programmatic impact at the sector and division level. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security.

Level 4 : Selects and develops technical approaches to complex challenges. Principal investigator or co-PI on multiple or significantly complex, and/or high risk projects or tasks and/or involving multiple tasks, capabilities, and organizations. Develops, and realizes new significant project opportunities, leading the development of technical sections of large proposals. Takes lead in scope, schedule, and budget for projects or large tasks Demonstrates ability to acquire funding for self and task level teams. Serves as a role model for quality, safety, and security. May contribute to directorate level operational improvement activities.

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA with 5 years of experience; MS/MA with 3 years of experience; PhD with 1 year of experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS/BA with 7 years of experience, MS/MA with 5 years of experience, or PhD with 3 years of experience

  • A Ph.D. in computer science, physics or related field is desired. Recognized research leadership in quantum computing, validated through a record of scholarly accomplishment, honors and professional service, and a national reputation will be prioritized. A proven track record of developing and leading teams with a diverse set of backgrounds working on focused problems, along with a consistent record of attracting funding for and leading groundbreaking scientific research are desired.

  • Knowledge of government programs, particularly within the DOE, in quantum information sciences

  • National Lab experience is desirable.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
