Job Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), operated by Battelle Memorial Institute (BMI) for the US Department of Energy (DOE), is seeking a dynamic and innovative Principal Compensation Analyst. This position reports to the Compensation and HRIS Manager. The Principal Compensation Analyst contributes to PNNL's financial and operational performance by leading initiatives, recommending business focused customer solutions, and performing advanced analysis for Laboratory's HR Compensation function; partners and consults with HR Managers on developing lab-wide consistent compensation solutions; and interacts with laboratory management on related compensation issues. Builds effective relationships across the Laboratory and with external vendors.

This position develops, implements, administers compensation policies, procedures, practices, and programs. Conducts surveys and studies labor markets to determine compensation trends. Analyzes jobs, and reviews job descriptions and specifications. Applies job evaluation techniques to establish equitable pay rates within the organization and analyzes government regulations, company policies, and ensures compliance with contractual agreements; reviews classification and compensation changes and makes recommendations with respect to tasks to be performed, qualifications of employee, and company policy and budgetary limitations; provides guidance to drive business strategies and makes recommendations to line managers and HR managers on all compensation issues; and interprets local, state, and federal laws regulating compensation practices. May be responsible for executive compensation, incentive plans, and HRIS functions. May prepare and deliver communications and training programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of direct compensation experience. Advanced degree and 8+ years of direct compensation experience. Professional license and/or certification preferred.

  • In-depth and/or breadth of compensation expertise as this position will lead projects with significant risk, complexity and broad laboratory-wide impact.

  • Proven ability to anticipate internal and external business challenges and regulatory issues.

  • Track record of contributing to the development of functional strategy.

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, PeopleSoft, and other related technology for survey management, market pricing, and competitive analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience in solving unique challenges of unusual complexity requiring a high degree of creativity and innovation.

  • Demonstrated experience formulating recommendations regarding development of pay structure(s), FLSA exemptions, job revisions, and organizational structures. May provide Executive Compensation services.

  • Providing consultative direction toward long-range goals and objectives, policy creation and interpretation. Regarded as expert in discipline and provides team lead support to others within compensation group.

  • Strong communication skills with proficiency in drafting business correspondence, reports and presentations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 12+ years of direct compensation experience.

  • Experience working in the compensation area in a compliance environment and with governmental oversight.

  • Consulting experience (i.e., Mercer, Watson Wyatt, Larson, Hewitt, Aon).

  • Certified Compensation Professional.
